10.45 AM  Registrar General to issue death certificates for over 200 missing persons of Cyclone ‘Ditwah’

The Registrar General’s Department said that death registration certificates will be issued for 203 individuals reported missing following the landslides and floods triggered by Cyclone Ditwah. Registrar General Sasidevi Jaladeepan said the decision was taken following a special gazette issued on December 2, enabling the issuance of a death certificate if a person remains missing for two weeks after a sudden disaster with no new information.

10.30 AM  New compensation package to convince relocation from landslide zones – Minister

Claiming that people in landslide prone areas have been reluctant to move out as the compensation was not sufficient, Environment Minister Dhammika Patabedi said yesterday the government was expecting that the people will now move out as a sufficient compensation package was proposed by the government.

9.45 AM  Search operations for the missing to continue

Search operations at landslide sites will continue unless family members or relatives of those missing request otherwise, or the government takes a policy decision to discontinue them, an official said yesterday. Badulla District Secretary Prabath Abeywardena says 806 residents from 238 families have been evacuated across the district due to the heightened risk of landslides triggered by the onset of the northeast monsoon.

The insurance companies in Sri Lanka have mobilised swiftly to provide relief following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, with the authorities confirming that the compensation payments for minor property damage have already begun. In response to the devastating floods that have hit Sri Lanka, the European Union has committed Euros 1.8 million in emergency assistance for the most affected areas. This funding will serve to provide essential relief to the most vulnerable communities. European member states are also providing in-kind assistance via the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. The Health Promotion Bureau has raised concerns over a potential surge in mental health issues among those affected by the recent floods. Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Vindya Wijayabandara noted that flood-impacted communities often exhibit signs of emotional trauma, including sleep disturbances, prolonged stress and even suicidal thoughts.

The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) reports that 143 kilometres of Sri Lanka’s coastline has been polluted following severe flooding triggered by Cyclone Ditwah. MEPA Chairman Samantha Gunasekara said the heavy rains and widespread flooding have caused significant environmental damage along the coast, and restoring the affected areas is expected to require 5,280 man-hours.

7.00 PM  Volunteers join efforts to restore Badulla irrigation systems

A two-week programme to restore irrigation systems severely damaged by Cyclone Ditwah began today (9) in the Badulla District, aimed at ensuring water networks are fully functional ahead of the upcoming Maha cultivation season. The Irrigation Department said 1,020 irrigation structures—including tanks, canals, bunds and anicuts—were affected by floods and landslides that swept through the district during the cyclone. The repair initiative, running from December 9 to 23, will cover 50 major work sites.

5.00 PM  Public warned of fake relief messages circulating after Ditwah

The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has urged the public to beware of fraudulent messages circulating on social media claiming to offer relief to those affected by Cyclone Ditwah. According to the ministry, a large number of misleading messages have been shared via WhatsApp, Facebook and other platforms, requesting personal details from individuals under the guise of providing disaster assistance.

Some 764 religious places, including Buddhist temples, Churches and Mosques, have been partially or completely damaged due to the Ditwah cyclone, Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Sunil Senevi said today. He told a news conference that 379 Buddhist temples, 165 Hindu Kovils, 63 Catholic Churches and 157 Mosques have been damaged.

6.00 PM  China donates 85 tonnes of flood relief to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka today received a major humanitarian relief consignment from China to support recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, President’s Media Division (PMD)said. A total of 85 tonnes of flood relief material, including life jackets, tents, blankets and sheets, arrived in Colombo this morning and was officially handed over by the Ambassador of China to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong.

2.00 PM  Public asked to avoid visiting disaster-hit areas

Since disaster-affected regions still pose serious risks, Director of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), Pradeep Kodippili has urged people to refrain from bathing or entering waters with strong currents. Speaking at a media briefing, Kodippili noted that relief operations are underway for communities impacted by the recent hazards and appealed to residents to report any urgent issues through the DMC hotline 117.

Police said that Dialog Axiata has urged the public, through the Inspector General of Police, to exercise caution regarding telecommunication cables that have been exposed or damaged in several areas due to the ongoing adverse weather conditions.

1.00 PM  Disasters can raise heart attack risk by 40%, Cardiologist warns

Global research shows that heart attacks and other cardiovascular emergencies can rise by nearly 40% following major disasters such as Cyclone Ditwah, Cardiologist Dr. Gothabhaya Ranasinghe said. In a social-media statement, he said sudden loss, trauma, and displacement create intense psychological stress, pushing up blood pressure and heart rate, which can trigger heart attacks—especially in vulnerable individuals.

12.30 PM  Cyclone Ditwah destroys 600 prawn farms in Puttalam

Cyclone Ditwah which hit Sri Lanka recently has destroyed more than 600 prawn farms in the Puttalam District alone, bringing the livelihoods of many farmers into a standstill, the Fisheries Ministry said. The Ministry said this was revealed during a fact-finding mission in which Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekhar was engaged in the district over the weekend.

11.45 AM  Seventh UAE aid flight arrives to support flood-hit communities

The seventh humanitarian aid aircraft sent by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to assist those affected by floods triggered by Cyclone Ditwah arrived in Sri Lanka. In a statement, the UAE Embassy in Colombo said the UAE continues to extend its support to the people of Sri Lanka through both its air bridge and on-ground relief operations, reaffirming its commitment to helping the country recover from the disaster.

10.30 AM  Reservoir water levels returning to normal: Irrigation Dept.

Water levels in reservoirs across the country have returned to normal, according to the Department of Irrigation. Director of Irrigation (Hydrology & Disaster Management) L. S. Sooriyabandara said data from monitoring stations show that no reservoir has reached flood level at present. He said the highest rainfall recorded during the past 24 hours—between 50 and 100 mm—was reported from several major catchment areas. Rainfall in the range of 50–100 mm was observed in the Kelani and Kalu Ganga basins, while around 50 mm was recorded in the Gin Ganga, Nilwala Ganga and Attanagalu Oya basins.

10.00 AM  RDA needs one and half years to reconstruct bridges

The Road Development Authority (RDA ) will need at least one and half years to reconstruct major bridges damaged in the recent disasters triggered by cyclone Ditwah, an official said yesterday. Director General of the RDA Wimal Kandambi told Daily Mirror that major roads affected by the floods and landslides would be rebuilt in the span of three months.

The government will carry out its post-disaster economic recovery plan in consultation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), an official said yesterday. The government authorities are currently in the process of assessing the exact economic loss inflicted by Cyclone Ditwah. However, it is roughly estimated that the disasters- riverine floods, floods, landslides and earth-slips- caused a loss of US $ 6-7 billion.

Health authorities are facing a massive challenge in preventing spoiled and unsafe food from reaching markets in the aftermath of the recent extreme weather conditions that caused widespread flooding across Sri Lanka. The government should expedite the disaster relief and rebuilding without saying 'ane please', Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa said today. Premadasa was referring to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who was heard saying 'ane please' when the former stood up in Parliament to respond to him. The incident took place when the President was speaking in Parliament last week.

4.00 PM  U.S. Air Force team arrives to provide American airlift capability

Two C-130J Super Hercules and Airmen from the U.S. Air Force 36th Contingency Response Group (CRG) arrived to provide American airlift capability in support of Sri Lanka’s Cyclone Ditwah response, a statement from the U. U. embassy said.

2.15 PM  Weather-related death toll soars to 627

The death toll from the severe weather conditions that swept across Sri Lanka in recent days has risen to 627, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said. A further 190 individuals remain missing as rescue and search efforts continue. Furthermore, the adverse weather has affected all 25 districts, impacting 2,179,138 people from 611,530 families.

1.45 PM  Myanmar flight carrying disaster relief arrives

A Myanmar Air Force flight (Y8) arrived at the Katunayake Air Force camp last night carrying disaster relief. A delegation from the Myanmar government also arrived in Sri Lanka along with the relief materials.

1.00 PM  Spill gates of seven major reservoirs opened

The Department of Irrigation said that spill gates of seven major reservoirs have been opened due to rising water levels following recent rainfall. According to the Department, two spill gates of the Kala Wewa reservoir and four spill gates of the Rajanganaya reservoir are currently open.

12.00 PM  Govt to launch cyclone housing damage assessment tomorrow

The Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Water Supply said that the assessment of damage to houses caused by Cyclone Ditwah will begin tomorrow. The process will be carried out by a committee appointed under the Presidential Secretariat and will focus on identifying households eligible for government support.

Lanka Ashok Leyland has donated seven essential utility vehicles valued at more than Rs. 65 million to support relief, recovery and rehabilitation efforts across Sri Lanka, the Indian High Commission said. This contribution was further strengthened by a Rs. 2.5 million donation from the employees of Lanka Ashok Leyland, the High Commission said.

3.00 PM  Tamil Nadu donates 950 metric tonnes of essential relief items

The Tamil Nadu government has donated 950 metric tonnes of essential relief items to people affected due to Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka. The ship carrying the relief items, including clothes and food, has left the Chennai port.

9.30 AM  Inclement weather claims 607 deaths, over two million affected

A total of 607 persons have died while 214 remain missing due to the severe weather, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said. According to the DMC, the ongoing adverse conditions, which began on 16 November, have so far impacted 2,082,195 individuals from 586,464 families across the country. Furthermore, the DMC stated that 4,164 houses have been completely destroyed, while 67,505 others have suffered partial damages.

In the wake of the natural disaster that took place in Sri Lanka last week, the tea industry was hit hard and may take months to recover to normal as machinery that has been destroyed has to be sent abroad to repair and damage to roads may affect the distribution of tea exports, according to an official from the Colombo Tea Traders Association.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has requested all licensed banks to provide temporary debt relief and fresh financial support to individuals and businesses whose income has been directly affected due to the Ditwah cyclone. The affected individuals and businesses have been requested to apply for relief in writing or electronically until 15 January 2026.

The Department of National Archives yesterday made an urgent public appeal for access to freezer facilities as Sri Lanka faces an unprecedented crisis caused by severe flooding that has damaged vast quantities of vital public records. According to the department, hundreds of cubic metres of irreplaceable documents—including court records, land registries, personnel files, financial records, and historical material—have been inundated and are now at imminent risk of destruction due to mould.

6.00 AM  Three hospitals extensively damaged

Three hospitals – Chilaw Base Hospital, Mahiyanganaya and Wattegama hospitals- have sustained extensive damage from the latest disasters induced by cyclone Ditwah and another 100 small hospitals have been submerged by the floodwaters, an official said. The cyclonic storm has inflicted the biggest damage to the Chilaw hospital, with all vital medical equipment, including the CT scan machine, being hit, according to Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe.

The Sri Lankan people have shown solidarity with the disaster hit people by generously donating blood, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament today. "People have donated 20,000 units of blood though Blood Bank wanted 1 500 units. This is the kind of solidarity shown by the people of Sri Lanka," the President said.

9.00 PM  IMF considers US 200 million under Rapid Financing Instrument for Sri Lanka

The International Monetary Fund ( IMF) is considering Sri Lanka's request for US $ 200 million  under the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI), according to Evan Papageorgiou, its Mission   Chief for Sri Lanka. He said the request is currently under consideration and subject to approval by the IMF’s Executive Board.

8.00 PM  Fully damaged houses to get Rs. 5 million as compensation: President

The government will provide Rs. 5 million as compensation for fully damaged houses, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced today. He told Parliament that a plot of land will be provided by the government if someone's land has been completely lost due to landslides.

7.30 PM  Government planning to get IMF sixth tranche increased: President

The government has negotiated with the International Monitory Fund (IMF) to increase the amount of the sixth tranche which was due in December this month, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today. He told Parliament that the IMF Executive Board is scheduled to approve the sixth tranche of USD 342 million by December 15, 2025.

7.00 PM  WHO issues guidance on handling dead animals after floods

The World Health Organization (WHO) Sri Lanka has issued public health guidelines on the safe management of dead animals found during or after flooding, following recent adverse weather conditions across the country. The advisory notes that animal carcasses—often resulting from drowning, illness or injury during disasters—pose health risks if improperly handled. The WHO warns the public not to touch, collect or consume dead fish found after floods, and to seek advice from Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) or local authorities before dealing with any dead animals.

The Ministry of Education said that donations made to official government designated accounts will fall only under the supervision of the Ministry, together with the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Vocational Education. The Ministries emphasised that they have not granted approval or consent for donations directed to the accounts of any other association or individual.

According to the latest situation update, 345 people are still reported missing, with search, rescue, and relief operations continuing across several heavily impacted districts.

A total of 159 schools in the Central Province have been damaged due to the recent disaster, Deputy Minister of Transport Prasanna Gunasena said. Of these, 115 schools are currently being used as displacement camps for affected residents.

The Ministry of Health has issued new guidelines outlining minimum standards for providing food and nutrition support to people affected by emergencies such as floods, landslides and mass displacement. 2.30 PM  Over 260 tourists affected by Cyclone Ditwah

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) announced that 269 tourists were affected by Cyclone Ditwah, which impacted parts of the island recently. In a statement, the Authority said the largest affected groups were 52 Indian nationals and 40 Bulgarian nationals. It noted that all tourists are currently being traced and confirmed safe.

2.15 PM  Kala Wewa spill gates opened to manage rising water levels

Two spill gates of the Kala Wewa have been opened by four feet each as of 9:00 a.m. today (04) in response to rising water levels, the Department of Irrigation said. The Kala Wewa is currently releasing approximately 3,800 cubic feet per second through the gates. An additional release of around 1,000 cubic feet per second from the Rajanganaya Reservoir is expected at 1:45 p.m., bringing the total flow into the Kala Oya to about 4,800 cubic feet per second.

Some 1,289 houses have been completely destroyed, while approximately 44,500 houses have sustained partial damage due to landslides and related impacts, the Housing Development Authority said. There is no reason for panic about the Northeast monsoon as it will not bring in heavy rains though it is expected to become more active within the coming days, the Department of Meteorology said yesterday. "The Northeast Monsoon is active usually within the month of December. It usually results in evening showers especially in the North, East and Central Province and sometimes extends up to Uva as well,” The Department of Meteorology Duty Forecaster Udeni Weerasinghe told Daily Mirror.

Nearly one-third of CCTV cameras installed across Colombo are non-functional, severely undermining the city’s surveillance, traffic monitoring, and public safety operations, a recent audit of the Sri Lanka Police has revealed. 9.30 AM   Cyclone leaves only 30% of railway network operational

Only 30 percent of Sri Lanka’s railway network is currently operational following the extensive damage caused by the recent cyclone, Commissioner General of Essential Services B.K. Prabath Chandrakeerthi said. Out of the country’s total 1,593 km of railway tracks, just 478 km remain functional. Chandrakeerthi said that the cyclone has severely impacted several critical sectors, including transport, agriculture, electricity supply, and telecommunications. According to assessments, 1,777 tanks, 483 dams, 1,936 canals, and 328 agricultural roads have been damaged.

Some 38 fuel stations have been damaged due to the flood situation in the country, Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody said today. He told Parliament that some of them have been restored and that 24 of them are still not operational.

4.00 PM  Nearly 70 countries pledge humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka: Minister

Nearly seventy countries have already offered to provide humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka in the wake of the disaster situation in the country, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Anura Karunathilake said today. He told Parliament that some countries such as India and Pakistan have sent humanitarian assistance for rescue operations.

3.45 PM  Public urged to take precautions as post-flood diseases surge

Health officials have raised concerns over a rise in leptospirosis (rat fever), diarrhoea, chikungunya, dengue and various skin infections in the aftermath of recent floods across several parts of Sri Lanka. Consultant Community Physician Dr. Athula Liyanapathirana urged the public to drink only clean water, either boiled or bottled, as contaminated water can easily transmit infectious diseases. 2.30 PM  Navy divers repair flood-damaged water plants

In the aftermath of severe weather, the Sri Lanka Navy has launched a comprehensive, island-wide Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) programme to deliver essential services to affected communities. 10.00 AM  Death toll from adverse weather rises to 465

The death toll in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah that ravaged the country last week has risen to 465, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) revealed in its update this morning. The highest number of deaths were reported from the Kandy district, where 118 people lost their lives. The number of missing persons stood at 366 -- a majority of that number coming from the Matale district. Furthermore, over 1.5 million have been affected by the cyclone and the ensuing floods, the DMC also revealed with 232,752 people from over 61,000 families currently housed in safety centres.

A special gazette has been issued declaring 22 districts severely affected by Cyclone Ditwah as national disaster areas. 9.00 PM  India rejects Pakistan’s claim of delayed clearance for SL relief flight

India rejected Pakistan’s accusation that New Delhi had delayed granting overflight clearance for a Pakistani aircraft carrying humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka, calling the allegation “ridiculous” and “misinformation.” In a statement, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the request for overflight clearance was received by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad at around 1:00 p.m. on December 1. He said the Government of India processed the request “expeditiously” and granted approval the same day at 5:30 p.m., in accordance with the itinerary submitted by Pakistan.

The Kelani River continues to rage at Nagalgam Street, maintaining a critical flood level of 8.45 feet, the Irrigation Department said. Authorities have issued stern warnings as floodwaters threaten Kadawatha, Ambatale, Kelaniya, Malabe, and other low-lying areas along the Kelani River basin. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 998,918 people across all 25 districts of Sri Lanka have been affected by the severe flooding and landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, which made landfall on November 28 before moving back over the Bay of Bengal. The Public Health Inspectors’ Union (PHIU) has urged people in flood-affected areas to exercise caution when using drinking water. The Deep Depression was located near latitude 12.3°N and longitude 80.6°E, about 300 km Northnortheast of Kankasanthurai, the Department of Meteorology said. It is very likely to move northwards, away from the island and weaken further. Several spells of showers will occur in Northern, Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts.

7.30 AM  Nayaru main bridge in Mullaitivu collapses amid heavy flooding

The Disaster Management Centre in Mullaitivu has stated that the Nayaru main bridge, Mullaitivu has been completely collapsed due to severe flooding. As a result of the damage, vehicular movement along the Mullaitivu–Welioya, Mullaitivu–Trincomalee, and Mullaitivu–Kokkilai routes has been disrupted, the Centre said.

7.00 AM  Water level at Nagalagam Street gauge surpasses 8-foot mark

Due to the rising water levels in the Kelani River Basin, Hanwella and several surrounding low-lying areas are currently experiencing a major flood situation. The Irrigation Department had announced that the water level at the Hanwella gauging station has reached 9.78 metres, approaching the level of a major flood situation. He further noted that water levels are expected to remain stable, with no further increase.

India has evacuated around 750 Indian nationals stranded in Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah, as part of ongoing efforts under Operation Sagar Bandhu. Evacuations continue via commercial airlines and Indian Air Force flights, the Indian High Commission in Colombo said.

8.30 PM  — 334 dead, 370 missing in islandwide disaster

At least 334 people have been confirmed dead, while 370 others are still missing, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) reported today. The worst-hit district is Kandy, where 88 deaths and 150 missing persons have been recorded. Badulla (71 deaths), Nuwara Eliya (68 deaths) and Matale (23 deaths) have also reported significant casualties. According to the DMC, the disaster has affected 1,118,929 people from 309,607 families across the country.

4.00 PM  400 Indian migrants evacuated from BIA after cyclone disruptions

About 400 Indian migrant air passengers, who had been stranded at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for several days due to flight disruptions caused by the recent cyclone in Sri Lanka, were safely evacuated to India yesterday (30), airport officials confirmed. Approximately 150 passengers were flown to New Delhi on flight C-130 at 2:30 pm, while another 250 passengers departed for Trivandrum on flight IL-76 at 4:00 pm. Both aircraft also carried flood relief aid.

The Kilinochchi District has reported the highest rainfall in the country over the past 24 hours, according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC). A sudden landslide in the Rambodagala area of Kothmale has claimed the lives of 15 people, authorities reported a short while ago. Around 50 others were injured and have been admitted to Kothmale Hospital. The landslide occurred over an area extending about 4 kilometers.

10.35 AM  Special visa relief for foreigners in Sri Lanka hit by adverse weather

The Immigration and Emigration Department has announced a series of special visa facilitation measures to assist foreign nationals impacted by the adverse weather conditions currently affecting Sri Lanka. According to the Department, foreigners who were scheduled to leave the country on or after 28 November but were unable to travel due to flight cancellations or weather-related disruptions will be exempted from visa extension fees and overstay penalties. A landslide occurred in Rambuk-ela village, within the Alawathugoda Police Division in the Kandy District, at around 1.30 a.m. today (29). Initial reports indicate that around 50 houses have been affected.

Amidst a major flood risk in the Colombo District due to rise in water level of the Kelani Ganga, a total of 6,016 people of 1,217 families have been sheltered in safe centres by 9.00 am this morning, the Colombo District Secretary said. According to the disaster situation report, 99,668 people of 25,159 families have been affected in the Colombo district due to the disaster situation.

9.50 AM — 40 rescued from flood-trapped bus at Kala Oya

At least 40 people, including a foreign woman, have been rescued from a bus swept by floodwaters on the Kala Oya Bridge along the Anuradhapura–Puttalam road. The bus, carrying around 60 passengers, was forced to stop as rising floodwaters swept it off course, and passengers sought refuge on the roof of a nearby house. Evacuation was not possible last night due to dangerously high water levels.

9.35 AM — Indian rescue team arrives in Sri Lanka to support disaster operations

An Indian rescue team arrived in Sri Lanka this morning (29) to assist ongoing emergency and relief operations amid the severe weather affecting the country. The team, which arrived aboard an Indian aircraft, consists of 80 personnel—including four women and 76 men—along with four trained rescue dogs.

9.10 AM — Flight delays, cancellations reported at BIA

The officer in charge at the Bandaranaike Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) said yesterday evening (28) that a significant number of flights arriving and departing from the airport have been delayed or cancelled. The disruptions are largely due to several aircraft that were diverted earlier remaining parked at other airports, including Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA), as well as Trivandrum and Cochin airports in India. Train services scheduled to operate on the Main Line this morning have been suspended following flooding along several sections of the railway track, including areas in Daraluwa and Gampaha. According to railway authorities, heavy rainfall overnight caused water levels to rise rapidly, submerging parts of the line and making conditions unsafe for train operations. Technical teams have been deployed to assess the situation and begin clearance work as soon as water levels recede.

The Department of Irrigation warned that the risk of severe flooding in the Kelani River is steadily increasing as water levels continue to rise. The Department said the river has already reached major flood level, with the Nagalagam Street gauge recording 6.4 feet. They said that once the level surpasses 7 feet, it is considered a critical flood stage.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has issued an extraordinary gazette notification declaring several critical services as essential services. Among the services classified as essential are electricity supply, the supply and distribution of petroleum products and fuel, including gas, as well as hospitals, water supply, and public transport services.

7.50 PM   Sri Lanka invites overseas and foreign contributions for disaster relief

The government has announced that Sri Lankans residing overseas and foreign nationals can contribute to relief efforts for those affected by the ongoing disaster situation in the country. To ease difficulties faced by the public during the prevailing disaster, mobile service providers have agreed not to deactivate telephone connections until 29 November. They have also committed to offering free calling for a limited number of minutes and free internet data when prepaid balances drop to Rs. 10, helping people maintain contact during the crisis.

Police said the bodies of five people have been recovered following a severe landslide near Yahangala Mountain in the Hasalaka area. The Government and people of Pakistan have expressed their deepest solidarity with Sri Lanka in the wake of the ongoing severe weather crisis caused by cyclonic conditions and unprecedented heavy rainfall affecting large parts of the country. A total of 56 people have died, 21 are missing, and 14 have been injured due to incidents caused by Cyclonic Storm Ditwah, according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).

The DMC reports that 43,991 individuals from 12,313 families have been affected by the extreme weather conditions. The storm has also left four houses completely destroyed, while 666 houses have been partially damaged across several districts.

The Irrigation Department have issued warnings of a potential major flood situation in low-lying areas of the Kelani River Valley over the next 48 hours, as heavy rainfall continues in upstream regions.

According to the Irrigation Department, rising water levels—driven by intense rainfall and increased water releases from upper-basin reservoirs—have prompted flood alerts for the following Divisional Secretariat areas: Eheliyagoda, Norwood, Yatiyanthota, Galigamuwa, Ruwanwella, Bulathkohupitiya, Dehiowita, Seethawaka, Dompe, Padukka, Homagama, Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kolonnawa, Kelaniya, Wattala and Colombo.

Sri Lanka has experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall across multiple regions over the past 24 hours.

According to the Department of Meteorology, the highest rainfall was recorded in Cheddikulam, Vavuniya, with 315 mm, while Alapalli in Mullaitivu reported 305 mm. Kandy received 223.9 mm, and Madu in Mannar recorded 218.5 mm. Significant rainfall was also reported from Madampe in Ratnapura (208 mm), Anuradhapura (203.6 mm) and Trincomalee (201 mm).

The Railway Department announced that the Colombo–Badulla and Badulla–Colombo night mail trains have been cancelled until further notice due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions affecting several railway lines. In addition, parcel transport services from Peradeniya to Badulla and from Kandy to Matale have also been temporarily suspended.

7.00 PM — Deep depression intensifies into cyclonic storm ‘Ditwah’

The deep depression which had formed near the Sri Lankan coast in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclone, now named “Ditwah.”, the Department of Meteorology said. The name “Ditwah” was suggested by Yemen and refers to the Detwah Lagoon on Socotra Island, renowned for its unique coastal ecosystem.

Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunathilake announced that all flights unable to land at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) during severe weather conditions will be diverted to Trivandrum or Cochin airports in India.
