Massive price hike for vegetables — Current prices by some vendors

Vegetable prices in Sri Lanka have surged dramatically after the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah destroyed crops. With supply down, local vendors have been forced to raise prices sharply.

Videos circulating on social media show that some vendors are demanding the following prices:

Leeks (1 kg): Rs. 2,800
Brinjal (1 kg): Rs. 800
Radish (1 kg): Rs. 400
Carrot (1 kg): Rs. 2,800
Green chillies (1 kg): Rs. 3,000

Meanwhile, panic buying at supermarkets and grocery stores continues — a trend that is expected to drive prices even higher.

Put some price control and these people exploit the current situation and they must be punished : They must reduce price taking into consideration of the situation but they increased it : Do these retailers pay more price to buy them if so, how or where do wholesalers buy ?’do the farmers increase prices or what is going on ?’who is making money ? Who is exploiting? Who the culprits? Find them and punish them?

Lanka, thst is typical JVP method that will ensure empty shelves for a long time and veggies rotting at wholesale centers because no retailer would pay higher prices to buy those. Instead , rectify the supply side of the market.

As per sources no demand for vegetables at Kappetipola due to transport issues. First need to restore transport facilities to control the situation before going to other actions.
