Massive price hike for vegetables — Current prices by some vendors

By Huzefa Aliasger

Vegetable prices in Sri Lanka have surged dramatically after the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah destroyed crops. With supply down, local vendors have been forced to raise prices sharply.

Videos circulating on social media show that some vendors are demanding the following prices:

  •  Leeks (1 kg): Rs. 2,800
  •  Brinjal (1 kg): Rs. 800
  •  Radish (1 kg): Rs. 400
  •  Carrot (1 kg): Rs. 2,800
  •  Green chillies (1 kg): Rs. 3,000

Meanwhile, panic buying at supermarkets and grocery stores continues — a trend that is expected to drive prices even higher.
