Colombo, July 17 (Daily Mirror) - Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne has died at the age of 63, in what is being reported as a suspected suicide.
Police Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler confirmed that the former police chief was found at his residence in Thalahena with a fatal gunshot wound from his service firearm.
His remains have been placed at the Mulleriyawa Hospital.
Wickramaratne served as the 35th Inspector General of Police in Sri Lanka, concluding a career that began in 1986 when he joined the force as a Probationary Assistant Superintendent of Police.
An alumnus of both the University of Colombo and the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, he held the position of Acting IGP for over a year starting on April 28, 2019, before being formally appointed as the Inspector General of Police on November 28, 2020. He officially retired from the post on November 27, 2023.
The Spokesman said that the Malabe Police is conducting investigations into the incident.
