Colombo, July 7 (Daily Mirror) - The government has appointed a three-member Committee of Inquiry to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the unrest that erupted at Negombo Prison on July 5 and 6.
Yhe President's Media Division said the committee was appointed today with Cabinet approval by Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake to investigate the circumstances that led to the incident and submit a report.
The committee is chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge Priyantha Fernando. Its members are Milinda Gunatilake and Mohan Weerakoon.
Senior Assistant Secretary to the President K. L. D. Asela has been appointed Secretary and Convener of the Committee.
The appointment follows the violent unrest at Negombo Prison over the weekend, which left several prison officers and inmates injured. The committee has been tasked with determining the causes of the incident and reporting its findings to the government.
