CID launches probe into Negombo Prison unrest; Key inmate transferred to Boossa

Colombo, July 7 (Daily Mirror) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an investigation into the unrest at Negombo Prison, deploying three investigation teams to inspect the facility and question those involved.

It was reported that the initial violence is alleged to have been orchestrated by inmate Katuwellegoda Suresh. Authorities believe the first clash erupted inside the prison's SM ward after two inmates suspected of informing prison officials about an illicit drug operation were attacked and killed.

Following the incident, prison authorities transferred Suresh under high security to the Boossa Prison complex.

Investigators believe the second day of violence was unrelated to the first incident. The unrest reportedly began during food distribution after an altercation between a prison officer and an inmate. The confrontation is said to have sparked a wider riot amid growing tensions over shortages of food, medicine and the effects of substance withdrawal among inmates.

During the disturbance, inmates reportedly confronted prison officers, forcing authorities to fire warning shots to regain control. Several firearms were reported missing during the chaos but were later recovered following an overnight search.
