UPDATE - Death toll rises to 26, over 100 injured

5.30 p.m - The death toll from the renewed unrest at Negombo Prison has increased to 26.

1.06 p.m - The death toll from the renewed unrest at Negombo Prison has risen to 25. Nearly 100 individuals have reportedly sustained injuries in the clash.

10.15 am - Fresh unrest erupts at Negombo Prison

The death toll from the renewed unrest at the Negombo Prison has risen to seven, with more than 50 people injured, police said.

According to police, those killed include prison officers and inmates. The injured, most of them security forces personnel, have been admitted to the Negombo Hospital for treatment.

The initial clash claimed the lives of two inmates and left 38 others injured, according to police. Those injured in Saturday's violence continue to receive treatment in hospital.
