Five people lost their lives and 614 people belonging to 172 families have been affected due to adverse weather conditions experienced in the Uva, Eastern, Northern, Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said yesterday.
They said 56 houses were partially damaged and two houses fully damaged. 203 individuals belonged to 61 families had been directed to safe locations.
Four deaths were reported from the Manmunaipattu and Koralaipattu areas in Batticaloa while one death was reported from Mannar Town.
The Meteorology Department said Northern monsoon conditions had established over the country and therefore, the prevailing showering condition in the Northern and Eastern parts of the country are likely to continue further.
The department requested the general public to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
