Colombo, July 4 (Daily Mirror) - The number of dengue patients in the country has risen to around 2,300, with the spread largely attributed to unplanned construction activities that create breeding grounds for mosquito larvae, Deputy Health Minister Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni said.
He made these remarks on the 4th while participating in an inspection visit to the Nawalapitiya District General Hospital, following the reopening of its renovated outpatient department and several ward complexes, which were upgraded using government funds.
The Deputy Minister said that hospital surroundings must be kept clean and free of mosquito breeding sites to prevent further spread of dengue. He also noted that maintaining the health of hospital staff is essential to ensure effective treatment for patients.
During the visit, he announced that the Nawalapitiya District General Hospital, which serves as a referral center for several regional hospitals including Dikoya and Gampola, will be provided with a CT scan machine by the end of next month.
He further said that Rs. 600 million has been allocated for the hospital’s development in 2026, with several projects already completed. He added that the government would continue to fund such initiatives under its current fiscal management policies.
Kandy District Parliamentarian Thushari Jayasinghe, Nuwara Eliya District Parliamentarian Manjula Suraweerarachchi, Hospital Director Janaka Somaratne, and several others were also present at the event.
