Colombo, July 4 (Daily Mirror) - The construction of the new Faculty Complex at the Sabaragamuwa University has been made possible through a major joint financial commitment from the Government of Sri Lanka and international development partners, marking a significant step in strengthening the country’s medical education infrastructure.
The project was formally highlighted by Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who participated in the inauguration of the newly constructed facility on 04 July 2026.
The Government of Sri Lanka allocated approximately Rs. 2,876 million for the construction project, while additional substantial support was provided by the Saudi government through the Saudi Fund for Development, including a US$ 50 million contribution to enhance infrastructure development at the faculty.
Further financial backing was also directed toward supporting academic and operational capacity, including Rs. 1,096 million for administrative and paraclinical buildings, Rs. 70 million for essential equipment, and Rs. 194 million under the AHEAD programme to strengthen academic resources and learning facilities.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said the investment represents a long-term national commitment to improving the quality of medical education in Sri Lanka, adding that such initiatives are essential to producing highly skilled, ethical, and globally competent medical professionals.
Officials said that the project is expected to significantly enhance both pre-clinical and clinical training environments, while contributing to the broader national objective of improving healthcare service delivery across the country.
