Whilst stating that authority of revising electricity tariffs is vested with the Power and Energy Minister and the Cabinet, President Ranil Wickremesinghe today requested Parliament to decide whether an inquiry should be conducted against the Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL).

Speaking in Parliament, the President said there was a conflict of interest when it came to PUCSL.

“The Chairman of PUCSL owns the leading real estate group Trillium Ltd. There are a number of companies under this group namely Trillium Havelock Residencies, and Trillium Negombo Villas. I would have gone against the tariff hike if I owned real estate companies. I have received many compliments against the PUCSL. It is Parliament which has the authority to take action against him. Therefore I request the House to debate it and come to a decision," the Present said.

"Authority of revising electricity tariffs is vested with the Power and  Energy Minister and the Cabinet as per the Public Utilities Bill and the Electricity Act. No one likes to increase power tariffs but we have to do it. We have to make unpopular decisions for the sake of the country. Sri Lanka is in a crisis today as a result of our failure to make unpopular decisions. We have to find Rs 400 billion to save the Electricity Board" he added.

The President also sought the assistance of the House to save the local banking network.

"Banks won't survive if they can't acquire the assets of debtors who have defaulted. We need the assistance of the Public Finance Committee for this purpose," he said.

The President said he would make arrangements for the MPs who are members of the Executive Council to meet officials of the IMF, ADB and World Bank and discuss Sri Lanka's economic crisis.(Yohan Perera)

President you increase the electricity and see what happens. You are putting all the blame on everybody else and going on increasing the cabinet, safeguarding the robbers, allowing all prices to increase. Your reforms are bound to fail soon. Curse

The president should first read the electricity act before making these sweeping statements. The PUCSL is the only agency available for the protection of the consumer’s rights which the CEB and the Ministry has been violating over the years.

First take the unpopular decision to determinedly recover the peoples' monies robbed and hoarded abroad by you know who. . Such action will definitely bring you victory at a Presidential Election.

When the government appointed friends fall on the wrong side of the government Prez and all become revengeful. When the appointees go with the political decisions even if they are unhealthy to us the government is very happy.

A fair portion of the losses incurred in generating electricity is the payment of interest on loans. If Ranil moves ahead with the recovery of stolen money then we can use that to pay off loans without paying any further interest. This will reduce the cost of electricity. Even Thiru Nadesan is walking in Colombo freely, no action is taken.

We have to make unpopular decisions for the sake of the country. The unpopular decision should also be taen to arrest the thieves who robbed the USD reservers.

Anton Mcdonald Friday, 09 December 2022 08:23 AM

Without jabbering nonsense reduce the number of cabinet ministers and cut down the facilities provided to other Ministers. Carryout an audit auction all additional vehicles used by the Ministers and hand over it to the treasury. Abolish the PC's and have a General Election. First remove the Log from your eye before trying to remove the dust from others eyes. You can do much more as a President do not be a slave to save your skin.
