An inmate of the Dumbara prisons who swallowed a fluorescent light bulb was admitted to the Kandy National Hospital.
The 42 year old prisoner from Gampola had been fround guilty of robbery and sentenced to five years imprisonment in 2022.
A spokesman for the hospital said the prisoner had developed inflammation in his stomach and he would undergo a scan.
The prisoner told police that two prison officers had taken him to a room and assaulted him while questioning whether he had a mobile phone with him and that he pulled down a fluorescent tube light in the room and had swallowed it in pieces.
Balagolla police are conducting further investigations.
