Police uncover 1,091 members involved in underworld activities: Minister

Colombo, Dec.25 (Daily Mirror) - Public Security Minister Tiran Alles said that Police have successfully identified 1,091 individuals engaged in underworld activities across the country.

Around 135 of them continue to operate crimes even while being imprisoned, he said.

Minister Alles said that this information has been communicated to officers in charge of respective police stations.

Meanwhile, the minister said that for the first time in history, steps have been taken to install a camera system at the Bandaranaike International Airport. This measure aims to enhance the scrutiny of wanted criminals attempting to flee the country, he said.

The Intelligence Unit and Police Narcotics Bureau have collaboratively compiled a list of individuals involved in drug trafficking throughout Sri Lanka. Police OICs are now tasked with arresting these drug traffickers within their designated areas, he said.

Minister Alles emphasized that numerous suspects arrested through these efforts are currently undergoing interrogation, with legal action being taken against them.

Also, the minister said that community police committees have been established in over 14,000 Grama Niladhari Divisions nationwide.

"These committees play a pivotal role in supporting national security by providing accurate information about residents in each village and monitoring individuals entering specific villages from external sources," he said.

Meanwhile, STF Commandant Senior DIG Waruna Jayasundara said that the special task force is playing a special role in island-wide operation to combat drugs and underworld, together with the police and community Police committees.

He said the STF has paid special attention to combat crimes and drug trafficking by organized gangs, especially in the Western and Southern provinces.

Hey Minister, Good morning looks like you have just woken up we had this crisis for long time in Sri Lanka, it's sad that when the elections are announced you look at the criminal activity to diverte the attention from the real problems the people are facing. How about the big criminals still living in the luxury houses. You arrest one high profile person then you will be the man. I can give you few names Mr minister if like.

But these efforts are in vain as a similar number of prisoners have been released by the President on the Christmas day. At least 90% of them will come back to prison after commiting more crimes.

This operation started to get President s approval for criminal Deshabandu to be confirmed as IGP. So far they have not touched any of the 12 importers of drugs including four members of parliament. If the law exists in SL first of all Acting IGP and the Police Minister both should be arrested and tried in courts.

14,000 arrest vs 1,041 identified as underworld criminals so rest of them are innocent or just fake numbers to stir the public And 135 still operate from prison using police or prison guard or warden or prison head so will they be arrested

Police spokesperson acknowledged that the majority of those arrested had been taken into custody on suspicion and have already been released on bail. “In some cases, we do know they are dealing in drugs though we couldn’t find any drugs on them at the time. But we do warn them when they are being released that we know what they are doing and tell them to stop,” no innocent till proven guilty
