Official death toll figures due to floods far from accurate: UNP

Colombo,Dec.2 (Daily Mirror) - Official figures of the recent flood disaster are far from being accurate, as some deaths have not been accounted for, a key opposition figure said today.

The United National Party (UNP) Assistant Leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the official death toll, which has exceeded 400, cannot be the accurate figure as there are many more deaths.

“Around 21 vehicles have been washed away in Tulhiriya itself, while similar reports are coming from areas such as Kurunegala. Therefore, the official figures given surely can not be accurate,” he said.

“It is essential to assess the loss of lives, injured persons and the property which has been damaged,” he added.

Why is it essential to assess the loss of lives, injured persons and the property which has been damaged, while priority is to get relief to the needy quickly instead of finding fault. We can get statistics later.

In a disaster situation such as this, figures do not come up as and when people lose their lives or go missing. It takes time for very obvious reasons. The UNP should not nit pick for political gain. Its for the flawed thought process of the UNP that the people rejected the UNP and it leadership.
