Colombo, March 30 (Daily Mirror) - Three Indian nationals who were engaged in employment at restaurants in Nuwara-eliya by violating their work visa conditions were nabbed by the Immigration and Emigration Department yesterday.

The department’s Investigation Division on information made the arrests from two restaurants in Nuwara-eliya, where the foreigners have violated their work visa conditions.

A senior official of the department told the Daily Mirror the Indian nationals had been granted employment visas to work in a particular restaurant in Nuwara Eliya and they were found working elsewhere.

The officer said that usually these kinds of work permits are not given to the individual but to the place of work and the foreigner is supposed to work only at that particular place of work. If one does not want to work there anymore his work visa will be cancelled, he said.

The arrested foreigners will be brought to Colombo and detained at the department’s detention centre in Welisara before they are sent from Sri Lanka. The inquiries were conducted under the instructions of the Immigration and Emigration Controller General Harsha Ilukpitiya.

Looks Sri Lankans are too lazy to work and the entire nation seeks handouts from various countries like India, China and others .

Disgraceful to assume problem is locals being lazy Sunday, 31 March 2024 04:46 PM

@Tamilselvan Are taking a nasty angle. Locals work hard, look at upcountry Tea Estate workers. Problem is most don't have skills to do anything different. Or those who get skills realise they are mad to continue to live in the country instead of going to Western nation. The country has skills shortage of capable cooks, as all those who are good leave quick, so has to import 45 or 50 year old go nowhere can't speak English, Indians to do the cooking of Indian food.

once the road is connected to india ,can imagine the magnitude of the problems

    Sokrates Saturday, 30 March 2024 12:46 PM

That's nitpicking. If the visa is tied to a restaurant, the restaurant owner can treat the workers like slaves since they are completely dependent on him. Some small Sri Lankan companies like to treat their employees like slaves and even more so Indian foreigners. What's the problem if they work in another restaurant?

Don’t you think you are wasting your time being logical in this forum ?

Sri Lankans are hopeless, when it comes to decency or fairness to others Sunday, 31 March 2024 04:42 PM

No work visa should be so tightly bound. It makes the workplace a slave master. The Sri Lankan system is about abusing minors at school through corporal punishment, and those who come through such useless school system because abusers of others in society.

How come foreigners are given work visas for these types of jobs when unemployment in the country itself is so high? So ridiculous!

    Sokrates Saturday, 30 March 2024 02:34 PM

This is also due to the fact that many Sri Lankans are too lazy to work or have insufficient qualifications even for these types of jobs.

RAHIM AWSHAD ABDUL Saturday, 30 March 2024 06:13 PM

Unemployment issues in Bangladesh too,but there are Srilankans working. One was killed too ?

The locals don't have the skills, but many locals love foreigner cooked food Sunday, 31 March 2024 04:40 PM

Does not matter about unemployment. The skills of other from overseas cannot be matched. Are you so dense, you can't see it is the quality cookery work of the Indians that employers want and they don't want unskilled Sri Lankans trying to be cooks. I don't want to go to these restaurants which get imported labor, because I find Indian food distasteful. However, there is much of the public who loves Indian foods and it would be unfair for them to get only Sri Lankan cooked foods.

Tissa Fernando Saturday, 30 March 2024 03:54 PM

Since Sri Lankans refuse to work but protests, the employers will soon start hiring Indians at very cheap rates. They will flood the employment market. This is going to be a huge social and economic problem in the future.

A new race to be born! Sunday, 31 March 2024 08:25 AM

Tissa! You are right. This is why the British rulers imported indented labor from India, when locals refused to work in tea estates. Today they are Lanka citizens with representatives in parliament. Now we have Bangladeshis as well, as they have same features as Sri Lankans.

You real Sudda or prentending to be a fool Sunday, 31 March 2024 04:43 PM

You clearly haven't been to N’eliya restaurants. Maybe you are trying to be like a Sudda, but really you have mentality of someone from 2500 years ago.

    Anandakumar Sunday, 31 March 2024 10:30 PM

Yes, no country should allow foreigners to work. Srilanka a working abroad also to come back and no one should be allowed to go abroad to work. This will solve the problem of social and economic problem

    Mohan Saturday, 30 March 2024 05:11 PM

They should have re-applied for new work visas.
