While the cricketer is entirely within his right to migrate, it must come as a concern to Gov why young people migrate from Sri Lanka. There is no fairness, no hope and no opportunity for them in Sri Lanka after they study or in this instance represent the country. This is uttershame and the the Gov must start worrying why the brightest and most talented youth are fleeing this country.

Colombo Citizen Sunday, 19 May 2024 10:01 PM

I have never heard about any foul play by this cricketer. Whatever assets would have been bought using his hard earned money. Not like politicians and business crooks who rob our money.

    Jude Sunday, 19 May 2024 10:01 PM

Angelo Mathews, all the very best and Best of luck with your future endeavors!!!

Why are all these people leaving this country which is getting better and better with each passing day?

    Namal Monday, 20 May 2024 12:16 AM

Getting better only for those who have money. For the poor majority no ending of their suffering

    Onlooker Monday, 20 May 2024 07:20 AM

A country where the IGP is a convicted by the Courts and almost everyone cracks jokes against Ministers about corruption is not the country for any cricketer who has respected the term - It is not cricket. May be some improvement in economy but getting worse and worse in the corruption index.

Geoffrey Anthonisz Monday, 20 May 2024 07:37 AM

Getting better each day ? Are you serious or are you turning a blind eye to all the corruption that takes place in Ceylon ( sri lanka ) ?

    Wagner Sunday, 19 May 2024 10:21 PM

Once they have made their target they will migrate as they know there is no future for them and their family you have to go begging behind politicians ti get things done

    Mee Sunday, 19 May 2024 11:06 PM

No one want to live in such a corrupt country like SRI Lanka Good decision

    S.K Kumara Sunday, 19 May 2024 11:44 PM

The question is NOT why are they leaving Sri Lanka, the question should be who will take these traitors once represent their birth nation and now at the age of retirement leaving the country in hopes of better future. Those tax payers in foreign countries doesn't pay taxes to maintain an elderly homes for old migrants. Once I had many chances to retire in 2 countries, but I chose to stay back and retire in Sri Lanka and fight the corruption, so my grand children doesn't have to chose.

Big Sam Monday, 20 May 2024 12:12 PM

Very good. How is that going for you?

    Roger Tuesday, 21 May 2024 09:39 AM

Keep waiting my friend, for another thousand years, may be. Good luck!

    Cheers Monday, 20 May 2024 12:29 AM

Why not retire now before the world cup rather getting another trip as the country can surely do without him in the world cup

    wsw Tuesday, 21 May 2024 11:36 AM

Why, are there others in abundance to fill his experience ? At least his calm head will guide the current captain from making irrational decisions influenced by his poor judgement.

    Ama Monday, 20 May 2024 12:55 AM

"...... bought a few houses in Melbourne" Sri Lankan cricketers never do charity work to their own people in Sri Lanka. Like SL politicians, they only accumulate wealth.

Daily Mirror is trash Monday, 20 May 2024 02:20 AM

Brilliant article yet again Daily Mirror. No mention of the player's name. Oh, and I seriously doubt he "bought a few houses" unless he's going to be land baron.

    Lionel Monday, 20 May 2024 02:55 AM

Has anyone wondered why they choose Australia? That is because that country has no corrupt politicians, no favours to anyone, law is applied to everyone regardless of their position in society, competent, qualified and right people are selected to all positions based on merit, not by politicians. All people have equal opportunities to pursue their dreams without obstacles. If you work hard and have the right skills and attributes, you make it. Equally, lazy, incompetent people are not given positions of responsibility. You have to be accountable for your actions. You will need to migrate when you are lalatively young, before you are 45. He has been planning for sometime, I'm sure. Why wouldn't you select a country like that?

    Vas Monday, 20 May 2024 03:08 AM

I'm one of them who left lanka cause I never got a pennies help from govt I ended up in Canada owned a hvacr business did very well and now retired lanka drives talent away get out when and if u can good luck to regular folks in Lanka.

    Ram Monday, 20 May 2024 05:13 AM

He always played with a straight bat and never heard for any foul play though the Cricket Board played foul at times on him

    Sobers Monday, 20 May 2024 05:54 AM

With the present politicians who are ruining the life's of innocent people, no decent srilankan wants to remain. With the migration of so many people, we will be left with only riftrats. Very sad for mother Sri Lanka.

Wimal Wijeratne Monday, 20 May 2024 06:46 AM

People come and go .Angelo is a gentleman and let him go.Not the end for Srilanka cricket.

    FredSnR Monday, 20 May 2024 07:10 AM

And the million dollar question why are you voting such people back? The elections are round the corner. The last chance possibly to make a wise decision before the COUNTRY goes Down Under. Some may think otherwise but if it is talent that is leaving one has to wonder why.

    Jeanne Tuesday, 21 May 2024 07:08 AM

The 2 million dollar question is, what other choice do voters have? Here's the melting pot that we are currently in: corruption, envy, jealousy, thuggery, fast declining command of the English language, and pure narrow-mindedness. Oh, and we are flat bloody broke. Still wondering, Fred?

    Sambo Monday, 20 May 2024 07:43 AM

Of course in Sri Lanka there is no opportunity or progress of property and this is the reason that every one who gets the first opportunity runs away from here.

    Sumith Monday, 20 May 2024 07:49 AM

Angelo Mathews bought a house in Cambridge Place, Colombo 7 for Rs 170 Million a few years before Covid and now wants to migrate. Why is he migrating when he is so comfortable in Sri Lanka.

    Jude Monday, 20 May 2024 08:34 AM

This IPL DAMN too long. Only Pakistan, Scotland and Ireland playing ICC Games!! 2 and half months shutdown of ICC calender is way too Long. Is it Indian Cricket Conference running the ICC !??? Never knew money can dectate terms to ICC happens to one of the most corrupted organization that is due to ICC not answerable to any one or any organization or any authority.

navratne willamune Monday, 20 May 2024 08:51 AM

one aspect people migrate forget, you are no one in a foreign country, you are some one in your own country.nostalgia will make you think of returning

    Nimal Monday, 20 May 2024 09:58 AM

It is better to be no one there. Yes, it may be hard for people used to SL corrupt practices. In SL if you know someone, you can do anything. In countries like Australia, everyone is equal before the law and no favours for political connections. You have to excel on merit.

Don. Anton Monday, 20 May 2024 08:52 AM

Our politicians playing the violin when our younger generation has no future in our beautiful country. They will be happy to receive the remittances from these younger generation.

Api lanka Monday, 20 May 2024 09:21 AM

They earn money and game using Sri Lankan passport and then they ditch the country, these people are biggest traitors.

Abdul Nasar Monday, 20 May 2024 09:46 AM

    Nowhere like motherland

    Man Monday, 20 May 2024 10:04 AM

I hope that he can play further for SL while being a dual citizen till retires or is dropped at least till the end of the England tour. His departure is a loss for Sri Lanka in the test series in England. D. S. de Silva played so.

    Inshi Monday, 20 May 2024 11:07 AM

Most are leaving not because they love to seek greener pastures but are forced to very sadly. Only when they want to return to our country and serve will be the time things are improving. Praying for a better tomorrow.

Roving glow Monday, 20 May 2024 11:10 AM

Mauricio Jorges Monday, 20 May 2024 11:49 AM

Thank you Wimal Wijeratne for the only intelligent comment. No one is indispensable. Bye bye Matthews or whoever; don't let the door hit you on the way out!

    FredSnR Monday, 20 May 2024 01:10 PM

SL majority shut out, Mathews was a top cricketer in his prime, still is, a game changer, Old Josephian, wish him luck

    Kasun Monday, 20 May 2024 07:00 PM

This sort of egos relating to school, city won't be there in Aus

Chaminda Kumara HW Monday, 20 May 2024 05:25 PM

Best of luck Angelo unfortunately the Gov has no any plan to retain them in our country after their retirement .

    Chaminda Monday, 20 May 2024 05:29 PM

    yes definitely

    Navi Monday, 20 May 2024 08:34 PM

Angelo if he was a such a decent gentleman, he should have not availed for WC 20/20 selection. Instead, his place should have been filled by Janith. This is selfishness on the cricketer's part and stupid decision of the selectors to give him an indirect farewell.

Albert Moses Tuesday, 21 May 2024 03:06 AM

Few houses? How? What kind of money allows you to buy few houses?

Cecil Hedwige Tuesday, 21 May 2024 08:21 AM

Why are they migrating to Melbourne. If you have money Sri Lanka is Paradise.Life in.Melbourne is a Super Market life. But no social life.

    Terrence K Tuesday, 21 May 2024 08:23 AM

@S. K.Kumara - It is very surprising that you have not understood the scheme for elderly homes. All these homes are operated from contributions by employees (67 years) during their working lives which includes the government contributuon. Sometimes as a buffer the assets of the family are sold by the government with their consent to replenish if a shortfall of funds arises to maintain the elderly. Especially cricketers who have being in international cricket have the resources to contribute to the government to enjoy the privileges in their waning years only if the family members decide to obtain admission to a nursing home. In Sri Lanka the government does nothing to ensure the senior citizens are well looked after even after working donkeys years and even the terminal benefits kept in deposits are paid a paltry interest to ensure big companies obtain loans at low interest rates to make substantial profits thus fleecing the poor senior citizens. What a life !!!!!!!

    R.M.Munasinghe Tuesday, 21 May 2024 03:14 PM

There is no future in this country , as the country has been messed up after 1977. It is therefore very wise to migrate to countries ruled by patriots, who love their countries and citizens.
