The former Chief Executive Officer of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) Dr. Vijith Gunasekera has been arrested.

He was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department after recording an almost 10 hour long statement with regard to the importation of substandard medicines to the country.

Earlier, Dr. Vijith Gunasekera was removed from the post of CEO on a decision by the NMRA Board of Directors over the allegations on the import of substandard medicines to the country and allegedly shredding a series of confidential, sensitive NMRA official documents.

The country has come a long, long way since the days of great medical professionals of the caliber of Prof. Senaka Bibile who dedicated their lives for providing quality drugs at affordable prices to the people of this nation. These scoundrels from the former minister downwards are interested in selling coloured water as drugs to innocent patients, including those suffering from cancer. I cannot think of anything more horrendous.

Even CID who war obstructing these crimes, blocking or taking bribes, not doing their proper job and duties should be caught and put into the cell.
