Australia pledges AUD 1million aid for Sri Lanka cyclone Ditwah

The Australian Government will provide AUD 1 million in humanitarian assistance to support Sri Lanka’s response to Cyclone Ditwah, the Australian High Commission announced on 30 November 2025.

The funding aims to support the urgent delivery of essential services to communities affected by flooding, landslides, and damage to homes and infrastructure across Sri Lanka. Australia will collaborate with humanitarian partners, the United Nations, and local NGOs to deliver on-the-ground assistance and rapidly respond to urgent needs.

In addition to the AUD 1 million contribution, Australia is working with local civil society partners to redirect existing funds to meet immediate needs in affected areas, prioritising vulnerable groups including women, girls, and people with disabilities.

The assistance also involves activation of regional response funds, including the Regional Prepositioning Initiative managed by UNFPA and Australia, which will provide support for sexual and reproductive health and protection needs of women and girls affected by the crisis.

Approximately 1 million Sri Lankans have been impacted by the cyclone, a number expected to rise as authorities continue assessments.

High Commissioner Matthew Duckworth stated, “Australia stands with Sri Lanka at this devastating time. We will work closely with government, humanitarian actors and civil society to meet the urgent needs of communities across the country. Our thoughts are with the people of Sri Lanka, in particular those affected by the ongoing crisis.”
