Giving military training to youth over 18 years of age is not financially realistic, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka told Parliament today.

Field Marshal Fonseka who is a former Army Commander said a sum of Rs. 750,000 will have to be spent for a single youth for six months.

Accordingly a total sum of Rs 75 billion is needed to provide military training to 100,000 youth within the stipulated age for a period of six months.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

This minister who has a navel background came up with this stone age idea. This was there is the US when Cassius Clay refused the draft in the 60s. It is no longer there. Now kids work on computers and do programming. The minister is a typical example of a "Bull in the China Shop".

The Easter Sunday attack was the result of giving military training to youth by a certain organization and the duty of the government is not to implement mass-scale military training to all above 18 years but to eliminate both local and foreign-based terrorist activities.

Leadership and motivation classes can be included in the current school curriculum. To inculcate in the children discipline, responsibility and be law abiding citizens. Most of the schools already have cadet platoons which can be restructured to accommodate most of the students. Currently they have Army, Navy, Air Force and Police cadet platoons. They operate as separate units and each force operates individually, duplicating the officers. Bringing all under one structure will be able to accommodate more students and will cost very little.

One of the reasons for the removal of the Shah of Iran and the r establishment of a theocracy and the resulting impoverishment of the country was a conscription that created a military mindset in young men that was manipulated to bring about Theocracy. Maybe the establishment of a Buddhist theocracy can be expedited if conscription is brought about
