Colombo, May 09 (Daily Mirror)- The Women Parliamentarians' Caucus (WPC) has  requested the Samagi Jana Balavegaya to appoint a suitable woman to the parliamentary seat of Diana Gamage.

In a letter to the SJB General Secretary, the WPC said while they respect the decision of the Supreme Court, they  deeply reregret losing a member of the Women Parliamentarians' Caucus and the reduction of the women's representation in Parliament.

The WPC said in the letter that women's representation in Parliament is crucial for effective democracy as experience, knowledge and the forward vision of the women contribute to drafting policies that are beneficial to all members in society.

They requested the SJB to consider appointing a suitable female to the vacant  parliamentary seat of Diana Gamage.

It is a wrong theory that the Female MPs are representing or must be representing females. It is the constitutional responsibility of all MPs regardless of their gender to represent the people who voted for them.

In a digital world, if a Dual Citizen holder has no permission to have a seat in parliament, then Sri Lankan government should not beg any help from western allies. This attempt seems targetting Rajapaksas, whose popularity amongst the public is in high calibre, fearing unstinted victory in the future elections.

The best suitable person selected by party should be appointed to Parliament. We do not need to bring in gender here.
