Katunayake, May 06 (Daily Mirror)- The man who spoke out at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) recently against the takeover of the on-arrival visa issuance process by an Indian company has been summoned to the Katunayake Airport Police to record a statement.

The man, who identified himself as Sandaru Kumarasinghe,  told reporters that he had been summoned by the Airport Police to record a statement regarding the incident where he spoke out against the on-arrival visa issuance process being handed over to an Indian Company.

He expressed regret at being called to the police station.

He said that the people must determine whether the statement should be recorded from him, who represented the people, or from those who decided to outsource the visa issuance to a foreign company.

He said people must have the right to raise their voices when national assets are sold out.

A video circulated on social media showing long queues at the airport and a Sri Lankan individual was blaming the Indian visa issuing officers, alleging that his wife's on-arrival visa was cancelled.

He shouted, questioning how an Indian person could decide his or his wife's visa status and asserting his rights as a Sri Lankan citizen. He claimed he had the right to decide his visa and emphasized his status as a taxpayer, stating he paid approximately Rs. 4 million rupees each year.

He insisted on his right to raise his voice in this matter and showed disgust as to why the Sri Lankan Government had to sell the visa-issuing system to an Indian company when several Sri Lankan companies could handle that.

Can SriLankan's do these things efficiently? is there any dept who does work efficiently and conveniently for customers? VFS is a global brand with reputation. however, this should be done online before the arrival of passengers and not after arrival and keeping the tourist wait in ques not a good thing.

On one hand I agree, that the visa process should be handled by government officers, since the previous online system was very efficient and robust. However, this man made a huge scene because there was an issue with his wife’s visa (which is what I read). There is a way to behave in public.

yes you have the right to speak up and defend, the minister must be making millions if not billions

    Asanga Monday, 06 May 2024 01:26 PM

Nod now the RW's government is shooting the messenger and the very person who raised his concerns about the injustice that he is going through..... What a shame! Which school did you attend Mr President? Are you actually Sri Lankan?

Better check his tax returns! Luckily he claims to pay tax (which is a very small percentage of those who should) sadly even those who do (except those doing routine jobs) declare very little for the returns. When did you last get a receipt for ‘professional services’ from the individual who provided the service? Same with traders and the like! Our local coconut plucker has an iPhone! , what more to speak?

First off why come to Katunayeka when police stations are at almost all parts of the island Secondly he was a bit over the top but as a citizen he has the right to speak as no long no public nuisance

    BuffaloaCitizen Monday, 06 May 2024 02:44 PM

If you had voiced on the non issue of Visa to your Foreign Girl Friend, that is accepted. This is also depending on the Laws of the country. However you had no right to abuse India and Indians who had nothing to do with the arrangement at the Immigration Counter of Katunayake Airport. If you ignorant, you should stay silent until you know properly the actual truth. However if you have been used as a monkey by some trouble makers intending to bring a bad name to the country, then you need to be arrested and sent to jail.

    Jeanne Monday, 06 May 2024 02:58 PM

He can shout all he likes. It's a free country. If you can tolerate protests and strikes then you should also permit freedom of speech against this robbery. The crime is committed by the Visa office - not by Sandaru Kumarasinghe. He should be applauded for his bravery.

    Spartacus Monday, 06 May 2024 09:01 PM

There is no heroism and bravery in his act. He was totally an ignorant fool who even does not know what VFS is and their services to various countries. His racism showed and many foreigners would have seen why Sri Lanka is a failed nation. The Immigration Officers watching the drama is another global pathetic failure which one will not witness on any other countries secure arrival zone.

    Jeanne Tuesday, 07 May 2024 09:17 AM

@Spartacus: Similarly, there is no "heroism and bravery" in using a pseudonym either .....

    Ram Monday, 06 May 2024 03:33 PM

This man went a little too far but his action helped all of us on seeking a visa at the airport as the systems changed. Now he has tom pay for highlighting. When a government is run by a set of hypocrites we must expect such action

    Lasantha Monday, 06 May 2024 04:07 PM

Created a drama, now face the drama! He may have been used to shouting, screaming, throwing his weight and getting his way through intimidation. It may be that his luck has run out. Now it may be time for him to face the music.

    Shera Monday, 06 May 2024 04:18 PM

No one saying why the wife's visa was canceled. Obviously this man exposed a lot of corruption. But he should have disputed his wife's visa cancellation without going off about his rights as a Sri Lankan and questioning the Indian staff's right to determine a visa. They are only doing their job. If you need a visa to visit a country it means you are not or no longer a citizen there. A visa officer will not see you as a Sri Lankan citizen. You may have been born and raised and look Sri Lankan but on paper, you are not. The government should not take action against this man and summon him to the police station. That's just messed up and is a turn off to future tourists who prefer to travel to countries who give rights to their people.

Indian or SL or Chinese it's the visa officer who decides on the validity of visa, its an officers decision not an Indian's decision

Should Join A Political Party If He’s Accepted By The Masses Monday, 06 May 2024 05:18 PM

He should join a political party and get his message across to masses. Seems a logical fella unless people who knows him to be otherwise should voice out their concerns about him. No one is perfect but so long he debates and brings out issues affecting the general population should be taken seriously.

Sam Silva Monday, 06 May 2024 05:54 PM

Not sure where this guy coming from because he should know how our country does their cunning ways to rip everyone. Being a srilankan he should be aware the underhand dealing the government does. It's upto that person to visit our country or not. You can't dictate a corrupt government.

    VJ Monday, 06 May 2024 06:50 PM

The guy was shooting in the dark. He did not have all the facts, made a fool of himself. If he was paying Rs. Four million in taxes every year, what would be his yearly income?

An arrogant Racist Sri Lankan. If white people company was asked to take over the issuance of visa in Sri Lanka, this person would have just shut up.

    Spartacus Monday, 06 May 2024 08:50 PM

Exactly. If this counter was manned by Chinese, do you think this fellow will even make a whimper. He will quietly walk away with his b@

    European Tuesday, 07 May 2024 02:11 AM

    Who is the racist here?

melville perera Monday, 06 May 2024 10:21 PM

he is not at fault for his outburst but the minister himself for his neglect to give publicity of such a unit within the airport at vantage points and including print and electronic media. To hell with the history of the company. Public convenience is more important

Personal opinion Tuesday, 07 May 2024 09:05 AM

I think the whole thing was blown out of proportion. Further reports show that the internet was down at the visa counter of which they had reported and the relevant authorities were failing to correct, so much so that a complaint of sabotage has even been filed. VFS is actually Swiss -American, NOT INDIAN! With branches in 151 countries, they just facilitate the visa procedures, like Visa card, Mastercard and Amex cards, it gives the end user a verified network. I personally have had better experiences using VFS services as compared to even trying directly from embassies. It’s unfortunate that a network failure, locally, is being turned into a diplomatic crisis of sorts. And nobody is at about the Singaporean company who was actually given the visa job, only assisted by VFS. It’s a shame. As for the gentleman in the video, I feel he would have had better success if he had just sat down with an immigration officer, heard the whole story and let it play out. I’m just saying
