The Health Ministry has initiated an investigation over an ill-tempered consultant pediatrician at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for  Children (LRH) following several complaints received against the consultant.

This was confirmed to Daily Mirror by LRH Director Dr G. Wijesuriya.

“I have received a spate of grievances from several doctors working with the female doctor over her conduct. Some of these doctors are co-workers, while other doctors represent medical associations,” he stated.

This was confirmed to Daily Mirror by LRH Director Dr G. Wijesuriya.

“I have received a spate of grievances from several doctors working with the female doctor over her conduct. Some of these doctors are co-workers, while other doctors represent medical associations,” he stated.

“Accordingly, I have informed this regard to the Health  Ministry and it has launched an investigation,” Dr G. Wijesuriya mentioned.

He also noted that the doctors working with the alleged consultant on the 8B ward have abstained from reporting to duty. “This is in fact unfair to the children being treated at the ward,” he said.

“Thus, I humbly request them to report to work with immediate effect; otherwise the lives of the children will be at stake,” Dr  G. Wijesuriya added.

Meanwhile, Media Spokesman for the Government Medical  Officers’ Association (GMOA) Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe told Daily Mirror that, “This is not the first time that complaints have been received against the consultant in question. There have been previous occasions  where she was in hot water,”

“Now, the matter seems to have been aggravated as no concrete action was taken on previous instances,” he added.

A doctor should be similar to a Saint, his/her soothing tone will automatically cure 50% of the sickness of a patient. None is indispensable in any profession, young doctors just completed interns too could treat patients similar to specialist or consultants. We have genius and intelligent doctors who will bloom soon.

Mate, pharmaceutical companies make the medicines and send them to the doctors with instructions on how to prescribe them. Then if you go to the doctor , he or she would prescribe the medicine accordingly. Where is the “ intelligence “ or “ genius “ in doing this job ? This is why the British government is planing a revolutionary move to become a doctor , without going to university, based on apprenticeship at the hospital. This shows you don’t need medical school to become a doctor .

@HR, what about surgery, do companies making surgical instruments give instructions?

    KP Saturday, 01 July 2023 03:10 AM

@HR. That’s the most over-simplistic nonsense I’ve ever heard. Do you think if a car company writes instructions on how to drive, anyone can drive? It’s your ignorance to think every decision in medicine is straightforward. In reality it is a delicate balancing act taking into account risk and benefit and many other variables like cost and tolerability of treatment ect. Not to mention the clinical skills and knowledge required make a diagnosis in the first place before prescribing medicine. Surgery is a whole other set of skills.

If the doctor treats her co-workers in a bad way, how would she treat patients?

This is a fight between union doctors and non union. GMOA had a agriculture guy, so he might have wanted organic fertilizer for children, ha ha

May be due to childhood abuse. Such abuses remain for a long period in life.

This is a fight between ethos and ethics of medical professionaim and personal ego. he should not that he can't pour his anger in public and how does he teach others .. Medical professionals must maintain their ethos

Most Sri Lankan doctors think they are gods and always treat their patients like some inferior people with hostility. I have had many doctors being incredibly rude the more popular they get.

GMOA is a political arm of SLPP, responsible for the mess today with Padadadeniya organic farming advice. They are now trying to be seen as neutral. One of the stumbling blocks to country moving forward.

A person working in this noble profession should understand that good bedside manners is half the trick of treating a patients. Not withstanding this, respect your colleagues for who they are. After all there is no 100% sure prognosis in medicine BUT a lot of intuitive guesses based on experience that produces a successful result.

The house officer at ward 07 at kalubowila hospital is also another ill tempered one!

Gone are the days Saturday, 01 July 2023 06:15 AM

These doctors nowadays are glorified sales reps for pharmaceutical companies to sustain a limitless revenue channel its now not about cure it is about drug dependency.

    Patient Saturday, 01 July 2023 08:14 AM

On a different note, can specialist doctors be asked to come on time for their channelling in private hospitals please? Some doctors are more than an hour late and come without even an apology as if it's totally fine to waste people's time forgetting that these are PATIENTS who have been kept waiting! They should be asked to refund half of their exorbitant fees if they are more than 10 mts late!
