The melody of the National Anthem, which was sung by popular singer Umara Sinhawansa, was not according to the melody described in the Constitution, the investigation team of the Public Administration and Local Government Ministry said.
The report was handed over to the Public Administration Ministry secretary last Friday (18).
Singer Umara Sinhawansa mispronounced a key lyric while performing the National Anthem at the 2023 LPL opening ceremony, and a video was circulated on social media regarding the incident.
The melody of the national anthem is described in the Constitution as singing in the medium tone, but Umara had sung the anthem in high pitch. While singing the national anthem in a high pitch, the key lyric of the anthem was also distorted.
Therefore, the investigation team was advised by the secretary to consult the Attorney General and take further action.
The team advised adding a regulation to the National Anthem as soon as possible when using it in a national event. It was also requested to mention the actions to be taken if the regulations were violated.
"We have certain regulations for the use of the national flag, but we do not have such regulations for the use of the national anthem.
"We also requested the secretary to issue a circular to all sports clubs and associations that organize international events to sing the national anthem in the medium tone and the proper lyrics until the regulation is issued," the team said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

I guess very few Sri Lankans have a university degree in music. Furthermore, I doubt that very few people, not even the MPs, know the entire text of the national anthem by heart. I recommend setting up a cultural police force that will arrest anyone who doesn't hit the right notes or sing the wrong words at any event where the national anthem is sung. This is a very urgent and serious problem, as the country's proud culture of more than 2000 years is at stake.

In my opinion I believe a stern action is required to avert such degrading of distorting the national anthem. Just because you have other important issues to be addressed, can not let go this kind of things. Most of the people commenting here are keeping one foot in an alien country and the other in the mother land why they mock on. Need regulations and the people should be educated. Having said that I do not believe in punishing anyone for something happened unintentionally.

This kind of stupid action is typical of a nation that has lost all confidence and are having a massive inferiority complex. I am glad that most people on this board do not have such complexes, but clearly, the people who run this country do. We seem so afraid of change. Music evolves, people evolve, usually for the better. People become more sophisticated. Some people in SL seem to be stuck with archaic practices and are refusing to get their heads out of the sand.
