Man caught selling women and girls earns over Rs. 45 million

The Illegal Assets Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a 36-year-old man who had been engaged in a prostitution racket using women in various parts of the country for 18 years.

Police said the suspect was also arrested by the Police Children & Womens Bureau for selling a 15-year-old girl online for sexual activities in June last year.

The Illegal Assets Investigation Division launched an investigation after it was revealed that the suspect had earned money by selling the girl for prostitution and aiding and abetting to the racket. Police said the suspect was earning money not only selling the girl but also her mother in prostitution.

Following the investigations, it had been revealed that the suspect does not have permanent job or permanent residence and had been operating the racket using women and girls for about 18 years.

It was also revealed the suspect was operating eight bank accounts which had transactions of over Rs. 45.6 million (Rs. 45,681,905)

Also, the suspect was arrested for operating brothels in Kandy and Gampaha areas. He was operating mobile brothels in Colombo using vehicles rented out from cab services.

The Illegal Assets Investigation Division arrested the suspect from Wadduwa and was remanded till March 4 after being produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

    Please legalise sexworkers like they do in developed countries. The women are much more protected and visible by the police and respected in general in the West. They are getting health checkups, have their own union, they get paid fairly. You can not forbid this ancient profession.
