MIT, Harvard show interest to collaborate with SL’s Climate Change University

President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that efforts are underway to establish a Climate Change University in Sri Lanka next year and prestigious institutions like Harvard and MIT have expressed interest to collaborate with it.

The President made these remarks at a briefing held on the progress of Climate Change and Green Growth held at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo between officials of the Climate Change Secretariat led by the President’s Adviser on Climate Change Ruwan Wijewardene.

The President said the University Grants Commission had recently identified approximately 130 scientists who have gained international recognition for their research on climate change. These scientists are expected to be brought together, along
with their respective international affiliations, as part of this initiative.

Wickremesinghe further said that the International Climate Change University would be a post-graduate institution solely focused on research and does not offer undergraduate courses. Any country or organization that contributes to the university becomes a stakeholder and gains membership on the Board of Governance.

The Korean Exim Bank has expressed interest in partnering with the university. President Wickremesinghe urged that all future research in the field of climate change should be conducted at this institution.

The President also requested the consideration of short-term courses for government officials.

before you allocate money, do you have data to prove your climate change university will stop climate change? don't blindly follow west climate change propaganda. i understand you want to serve your western master now that you got the top job as a stroke of luck but you are gambling with people's money.

climate change is a hoax created by liberals in western countries that ranil is hell bent on serving. earth has natural cooling and warming cycles called Milankovitch cycles. global warming is not man made. its part of a natural cycle. don't interfere with nature.

They are probably going to be curtailed by various religious groups views. Catholics will insist on 7 day world creation interpretation, and other non-scientific views based on their religious texts. Without complete freedom of expression, it would be a waste of their time to come here. Freedom groups here should inform the scientists about the backward repressive ways of the government here, and ask them to better spend their time than come here.

Now education is money making machines.. western universities do not care about the quality of education they provide but they are busy in making money each one of them compete one another to get more money ...Will this university get any funding from anywhere? Can UGC afford to this ...Is it another debt trap as MR did with his projects ..Now this time Ranil had picked education as he is keen in reading and researching..what crime this 22m Sri Lankans have done in their life to suffer like this at the hands of our politicians? Each one come with new projects? Did our experts in education;climate studies; finance and other professionals have advised president to do this ? Or it like organic fertilizer issue? People often put Harvard and MIT at the same level, the truth is Harvard is more of an Intellectual University with top Scientists, Mathematicians, Economists and Lawyers, whereas MIT is just an “engineering” university. Harvard is for the elite students and academics , MIT is for the hardworking common students and practical academics. If you want to become a great Scientist, Mathematician, Economist, Lawyer ,or a thinker then apply to Harvard , if you want to make money by building things then apply to MIT they will show you how to build and sell.

This is a good initiative ,first of all improve our present science faculties in our state universities. Start new post graduate programs and retain good qualified Acadamics. Taking loan and starting university will not help the country.

What a stupid idea is this ? What a kind of people will invest in this university? Suppose we have enroll 1000 students to this university out of our 20.0000 students who enroll into different universities in Sri Lanka...where will those 1000 graduates will get jobs ? will our president send them all to Europe and USA and other countries that engage in climate sciences? Can we give jobs in our country? Mr president you are not expert in education and HE and career opportunities... don't try to involve in every field you don't know ..if you are keen to develop this country take some gradual steps and don't rush.. firstly some some radical change in our primary education and then secondary education and then university education..we still very behind to Singapore; Malaysia or many other countries in education..go and see how many fake PhD holders we have in our universities..go and see how fake teachers we have in our schools ..go and see how unqualified people in our departments ?

Sri Lanka will never be able establish climate change as many of the obese men that are heads of governmental power, elected by the people travel in V8 Landcruisers, that guzzle more than what they provide to the ecosystem. No prestigious institutions like Harvard and MIT, will not be able to assist Sri Lanka unless this issue is addressed!

This president, like all our other Ministers, is adept at plucking ideas out of his nether regions an attaching well known names to them. So now, Harvard and Yale.. may as well include Oxbridge.. ..and I'm sure the VW plant is churning out cars by the hundreds and the same is true of the microchip factories. We can barely grow manioc to feed ourselves and this guy and his ilk are building castles in the air !
