Colombo, Feb 16 (Daily Mirror) -  The widow of the carpenter who died in the Narammala police shooting incident today filed a Fundamental Rights petition before the Supreme Court seeking a compensation of Rs. 200 million from the police officers including Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon.

The deceased Roshan Kumarasiri was shot dead by Sub Inspector Gunawardena who was on duty in civvies when the deceased was returning home after work.

The petitioner Kamani Rupika Priyangani stated that she entered into marriage with the deceased Roshan Kumarasiri in 2007, and they have three children. She said the two elder girls are twins who are presently 16 years of age and they are expecting to sit for the G.C.E. (O/L) Examinations this year. The petitioner states that the younger child is a son who is eight years of age an is studying in Grade three of the school.

The petitioner stated that the first and second respondents Sub Inspector Gunawardena and Police Constable Chamuditha Bandara Kulasekara respectively have acted arbitrarily in abuse of their powers by arrogating absolute powers onto themselves.

The petitioner further stated that the OIC of the Narammala Police Station, Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon and the State have allowed the first and second respondents to engaged in their duties in violation of the applicable laws and procedural guidelines during the 'Yukthiya Operation'.

The petitioner further states that Acting IGP Tennakoon also visited her house after the incident and handed over a
cheque for the value of one million rupees.

The petitioner is further seeking a declaration that her husband's fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution have been violated by the respondents and the State.

This petition had been filed through Attorney-at-law Sunil Watagala.

She should demand a compensation package from the shooter personally apart from the police department.

INNOCENT MAN PAYS WITH HIS LIFE DUE TO POLICE BRUTALITY AND GUN TRIGGER COPS Friday, 16 February 2024 07:53 PM

Sad state of affairs, but I cannot understand why the wife accepted the cheque of ONE MILLION RUPEES NO MENTION IF SHE SIGNED ANY DOCUMENT, WHICH IF SHE HAS MAY HAVE SAID FULL AND FINAL SETTLEMENT. NOT sure how it has played out accepting a cheque and then demanding NINETY-NINE MILLION MORE? I HOPE HER LAWYER/S CAN WIN THIS CASE FOR HER LATE HUSBAND'S DEATH, SHE WILL BE ABLE TO EDUCATE HER THREE CHILDREN AND HOPEFULLY THEY GO ON TO DO WELL IN LIFE.

Pay whatever amount she asks incompetent police officers. Am sure the amount will be insufficient with the rate of inflation. Am sure the obsolete justice system will deliver an obsolete judgement.

Is 200 million based on the estimated earnings by the carpenter gor tge rest of his life if he had lived? Lawyers are probably going to get half of the compensation.

    A Pohottu Supporter Sunday, 18 February 2024 12:24 PM

Dear Mr. Tissa Fernando; that Rs. 200 million is estimated, as his wife knew that he was going to take up politics and would have been an MP, and in 12 months he would have earned more than Rs. 200 million.

Brave woman, this is the way we should teach lessons from the police thugs, including Deshapalu and Tiran the conspirator.

Guys in uniform….police or whatever…Wearing uniforms and holding offices don’t give you free pass to hit and shoot to the people. Sooner or later you will have to face your Judgement Day either in this world or beyond. At the same time I wish this FR petition be heard by a bench of judges having god fearing conscious and unbending backbones.

Thousands were arbitrarily shot and killed in the North and the East. Not a cent in compensation.

    Chuti Sunday, 18 February 2024 05:57 PM

Do. not know the details of this case but police should pay a heavy price if acted wrongly. If not, they get away even with murder as just like the politico's they also feel that they are above the law !!!
