It is better for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to leave his residence without waiting till he is asked to do so, Cabinet spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said today.
If he understands the provisions of the Presidents' Entitlements Act, the he should do so, added Minister Jayatissa.
He told the weekly briefing to announce Cabinet decisions that the Act clearly says former Presidents are entitled to one-third of their salary.
"The former President has been in governments which had enforced this Act. He must understand its provisions. It clearly says that former Presidents are entitled to one-third of their salary. If he understands this, the it is better for him to leave without waiting till he is asked to vacate the residence," he said responding to a question that former President Rajapaksa is prepared to leave if he is asked to.
Responding to a question, he said this rule applies to all as the people have given a mandate to the government to abolish privileges of politicians and ease the politicans' burden on the people.

If MR had some decency he would have left and gone immediately after the Presidency. Still waiting to grab whatever he could after bankrupting the country. Damn shame, entire tribe of looters.

If that is the act on privileges, MR can be informed in writing to leave. I think AKD mentioned its a house or 30% of the salary to be given. If the government decides to pay 30% and not give a house, then the government should inform MR in writing of the government decision.

Ok if that is the case, you need to do it professionally making it known to great MR on right channel, not resorting to cheap politics for gallery. We voted for you not for this kind of things but for a real change. NPP lot seems to be worse than the previous lot. Mate you better focus your energy on matters that requires priority. Public is fast loosing the respect for AKD and his team.

Yes, MR must vacate. MR knows what he is entitled to as per the Act. Likewise, all other former Presidents must abide by the stipulations in the Act. The Act must be amended forthwith. Former Presidents etc. manipulated the laws in connivance with other Ministers.

Yo, wake up. MR has not made any comment, others have. Why only MR when other ex Presidents live in state provided residences, one for several decades and who owns property in Colombo 7. In the case of MS was there not a court case challenging the decision allow him to stay in the same house as when he was president?? This is all a smoke screen to divert attention from the realities.

NPP must be decisive without just talking and giving extensions to implementation. Issue a letter referencing the current rules and regulations applicable with a deadline to vacate the property. If not vacated by the deadline, prosecute him and drag him to the court to get eviction notice from the judge. Arrange police and STF to remove him ‘peacefully’ from the home. Show to public no one is above the law. Everybody else will be willingly follow the law if you guys do this. A country cannot go on like this. Get any SLPP slaves who would protest violently into custody and apply law. Just do it without talking. This is why people gave you 2/3 majority in parliament.

There is no necessity to provide houses, vehicles etc etc to parliament members they should use public transport for their transportation as general public, general public did not force them to enter politics, politicians are doing a honorary job its not a profession, stop vehicle permit to all.

Ranjith Wednesday, 22 January 2025 06:44 AM
No houses no vehicles for parliament members use public transport like the general public don't misuse tax payers money. Please stop vehicles permit immediately. Politics is a honorary service to the country not a profession.

Rajapakse, please do not continue to be a burden on poor people of the Country. Why should we have to look after you and your children as well. Leave the current residence and take what is entitled under the law. By the way who paid for this mansion to be built, who approved and when? Can NPP Government disclose this information pls.

Agreed fully. But this greedy will hang on to it to the last minute. Give him a 3 months notice and ask to leave the premises. He is not above the law. We voted NPP in to do those changes and the current Government has an obligation.

NPP is very poor in explaining facts. The house located in Wijerama Road is not a small house. It was an expanded house incorporating two adjoining properties when he was the prime minister. He spent 1 billion rupees. He had Araliya Gaha Mandiraya as the official residence but he didn’t want to use it. He had king’s life using public money. These robe wearers are blind and deaf.

Politicians should be given a good salary that they can survive on. On today's prices an MP should at least receive 200000 thousand rupees a month. This a way to stop corruption, and attract able politicians who can do the job.

Perera Wednesday, 22 January 2025 07:11 AM
If MR is willing to pay the balance Rs.4.57m as rent after getting credit for his Rs.30,000 rent allowance then MR need not vacate the residence. Getting a fully maintained sprawling mansion of 30,000sq feet sitting on one acre of land at Wijerama Mawatha Col.7 is cheap at 4.6m.

Let's treat everyone with dignity and respect. Sending an official letter conveying the Cabinet decision based on the constitutional provision shuld be the way to go. Further don't make it a public show. Let's remember that Until it is proved in the Court of Law, a person cannot be labeled as 'Horu' Our President AKD behaved the same way when he was deciding on the request from the PP Ranil's Office for security, chefs, and 16 Umbrellas. When there are several men on different locations no one requests for one umbrella. AKD made as Ranil has ask for 16 Nos for his personal use. The JVP NPP shoulld learn to commicata all matters in an official manner without seeking cheap political milage.

These past president dont care a dam for the country or its people what they want is comfort associate with luxury life from the taxpayers money, which could have been otherwise used for the people who are trying to get a one square meal day. Mahinda, Chandrika, My 3 know very well the economic condition of this country and living stranded of the majority but they dont pay any attention even though this was the legacy brought by them to the country. This government promised at every election meeting that they reduce this burden of maintaining of past president at a high cost and they receive over whelming majority to implement these measures and the government is doing what they have promised to the people and that is democracy.

You are clearly clueless. Ranil doesn't live in a state property. He lives at his private residence at Kollupitiya which is property belonging to his wider family as many other family members also have their residences there.

Nalinda, My view is he need not leave until requested. Are you planning to one day say we didn't ask him but he left? I agree that he must leave the house that can derive LKR 4.6M a month income and it is unfair by him to deprive the people of such a big income. The government must offer a decent house for his occupation

NPP is delivering what was promised Wednesday, 22 January 2025 08:48 AM
Before all this, can you please reduce the price of fuel by Rs 150 as promised before elections, which, according to your comrades, was going to the pocket of the former Minister of Petroleum? Without talking nonsense, can you initiate action to recover the stolen money from Uganda, which will be, at least, a one-off injection to the FOREX reserves of the country? Since you all have nothing to show, you create these dramas to divert peoples' attention from burning economic issues. Whatever the mistakes, Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse gave the political leadership to trounce the 30-year terrorist insurgency. What have you all done to this nation?

This politico has lo to learn and the people must be ashamed to have a minister who does not know accepted standard state practices. The government as the the agent appointed by the state offered MR (former president), a house in writing. Therefore the current agent (NPP government) appointed by the state of Sri Lanka, must request MR in writing to leave the house for whatever the reason agent has decided. Unfortunately, none of the politicians understand the the government is a temporary agent of the state.

Without making a big fuss and law and order come into effect, he should leave that MANSION in Wijerama Mawatha. Believe he has at least 1% of dignity.

In USA and other countries once ousted President's do go to their own homes, estates and live a private life. Where as in Sri Lanka though being very poor all past presidents and their widows live in Official bungalows in Colombo bringing a burden to the economy. Their electricity Bills , water Bills and other maintenance of the houses all done by Government. it is a good decision made by this Government if fully implemented.
