Best athlete-Women’s: Nilani Rathnayaka

National champions Sumedha Ranasinghe and Nilani Ratnayake were adjudged the best athletes overall at the Centenary National Athletic Championships, which concluded at the Mahinda Rajapakse Sports Complex in Diyagama. Ranasinghe won the javelin by throwing a distance of 82.18 metres, while Ratnayake won the 3,000-metre steeplechase after clocking in at 9 minutes 40.24 seconds.
The Nationals served as the final selection trial for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and Hangzhou Asian Games.
The 12 events that were postponed because of rain were held on Saturday.
Army athletes Chamod Yodhasinghe (10.50s) and Amasha de Silva (11.09s) won the men’s and women’s 100m finals, to be crowned the fastest in Sri Lanka at the championship.
