For the attention of CMC’s new leadership

Galle Face Green, a treasured landmark of Colombo and a symbol of environmental beauty for over a century, is now facing a serious and growing health hazard. Once admired by both locals and foreign visitors for its open spaces and oceanfront charm, the area is increasingly overrun by rodents of various kinds.
These mice and rats are now a common sight, particularly near food outlets, where leftover food discarded by thousands of weekend visitors provides an easy feeding ground. This unchecked infestation presents not only a public nuisance but also a significant public health threat.
Also, of particular concern is the risk of leptospirosis (rat fever), a potentially fatal disease transmitted through contact with rodent waste. If swift and effective action is not taken, Colombo could face a serious outbreak with devastating consequences.
We urge the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) to treat these issues as a priority:
1.    Implement urgent pest control and sanitation measures.
2.    Enforce strict waste disposal and food outlet hygiene regulations.
3.    Launch a public awareness campaign to prevent food littering and promote civic responsibility.
Galle Face Green is more than a park; it is a part of our national identity. It is vital that this historic public space be restored to its rightful condition: clean, safe, and welcoming for all.
Let this be a defining moment for the new administration to show commitment, capability, and care.
