Dear Mother Lanka

11 Dec 2025 - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

I’m writing you this letter with a heartbeat for a pen,
’Cause you’ve been fighting through the storms again and again.
Little island of mine, wrapped in green like a queen,
Mountains standing guard while the monsoons scream.
Even when Hurricane Dithwa tried to split your skies apart,
Your valleys held firm nature shielding you like a loyal heart.
Sri Lanka, you’re resilient in a way that feels unreal,
You’ve carried more pain than any nation should feel.
Thirty years of civil war still you rose from the smoke,
Then the tsunami hit hard, like a cosmic joke.
Easter attacks, broken hearts, prayers drowned in sorrow,
Economic crash that stole today and dimmed tomorrow.
And now floods again, like you can’t catch a break,
Like destiny keeps testing how much one island can take.
But Lanka, listen, my love for you is loud like drums,
’Cause I see your courage bloom every time the darkness comes.
I see people helping people, even when they’re hurting too,
Sharing the little they have, painting the whole island blue.
You’re battered, but you’re beautiful; you’re cracked, but you shine,
A lotus through the mud, still forever divine.
And yeah, it’s unfair, so unfair I can’t pretend,
I wish you a government that protects you end to end.
Leaders with compassion, hearts honest and clear,
People who serve you, not themselves. Sri Lanka,
You deserve justice, fairness, a future that’s bright,
A system that finally gets your story right.
But through every blow, every storm, every scar,
You remind me who you are, my unbreakable star.
Hope isn’t gone, it’s just hiding in the rain,
Waiting for the dawn to rise over your pain.
Sri Lanka, my love, I believe in your healing
In your oceans, your hills, your unstoppable feeling.
And even when the world seems too heavy to carry,
You stand, still bold, still brave, still legendary.
With all my heart,
Someone who loves you more than words can say
Subhashi Nanayakkara
