National Archaeological Conference to begin in Colombo today

Coinciding with the 136th Archaeology Day, the national archaeology conference titled “Breathing Life into Heritage” (Urumayata Jeevayak), organised by the Department of Archaeology, is scheduled for July 7 and 8 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. The opening ceremony of this conference will commence on July 7 at 9:30 a.m. at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

At this conference, several scholars who have rendered distinguished service to the field of archaeology are set to be recognised, and several new publications by the Department of Archaeology are scheduled to be launched. The book titled “Degaldoruwa: The Wonder of a Heritage” will be launched, and a special review of the work will be conducted. Additionally, special awards will be presented to those who have contributed to the preservation of archaeological heritage.

The Deputy Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Gamagedara Dissanayake; the Secretary to the Ministry, Prince Senadheera; the Director General of Archaeology, Senarath Wickramasinghe; Professor Raj Somadeva; and numerous other experts in the field are scheduled to participate in this event.

A number of research papers are scheduled to be presented by senior and junior archaeologists at this conference. The overall programme includes nine archaeological sessions spanning the two days. The conference will conclude following the archaeological sessions scheduled for July 8.
