A group of young men are alleged to have assaulted with  clubs the police officers on traffic duty at Komaligama in Thanamalwila-  Udawalawa road on Sunday afternoon (17). The injured officers were  admitted to Thanamalwila Divisional Hospital.

Police said a motorcycle from the direction of Udawalawa  had sped away ignoring the order to halt and when the police gave chase,  the motorcycle had entered a private land and halted.

However, when the officers questioned the riders why they  ignored the order to halt and sped away they had told police that they  were under the influence of liquor and that they attempted to evade  arrest.

Meanwhile, two other police officers had arrived in the  scene to seize the motorcycle and to take it to the police station.  However, two men under the influence of liquor who appeared on the scene  had an altercation and assaulted the officers with clubs.

A police team under HQI Thanamalwila Police D.M.P. Bandara  rushed to the scene on information, and arrested the suspects and  admitted the injured officers to hospital.

The suspects were to be produced before the Wellawaya Magistrate.
