Conjoined twins successfully separated at Peradeniya

Colombo, July 9 (Daily Mirror) - A landmark surgery that successfully separated five-year-old conjoined twins has been hailed as a major achievement in Sri Lanka’s medical history, while also reigniting debate over the capabilities and challenges of the country’s public healthcare system.

A team of doctors from the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Specialist Children's Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya successfully separated conjoined twins Linuli Tharulya and Lithuli Manulya following a highly complex surgery performed on June 10.

Born in 2021 in Aranayake, Mawanella, the twins had remained under the close supervision of specialists for more than five years. During this period, medical teams carried out extensive investigations, planning and several procedures before proceeding with the final separation operation.

The surgery, considered one of the most complex paediatric procedures performed in Sri Lanka, resulted in the twins being successfully separated into two independent children.

The achievement has drawn widespread praise for the skill, commitment and expertise of Sri Lankan medical professionals. However, it has also sparked renewed discussion on the state of the public healthcare sector, which has frequently faced criticism over shortages of medicines, equipment and financial resources.

Medical professionals and members of the public have highlighted the successful operation as evidence of Sri Lanka’s ability to undertake highly specialised medical procedures within the country.

They stressed that increased investment in public hospitals could further enhance such capabilities, strengthen healthcare services and reduce the need for patients to seek costly treatment overseas.

The successful separation of Linuli and Lithuli is being regarded as a significant milestone in the history of Sri Lankan medicine, showcasing both the potential and challenges of the country’s public health system.
