Middleman arrested for price gouging at Kalutara eatery

• Police have also initiated legal action against the owner of the eatery in connection with the incident

A middleman who gained notoriety in a social media video for overcharging a foreign national at a Kalutara eatery for ‘Vadai’ and ‘plain tea’ was arrested by the Tourist Police yesterday.

In a separate case, law enforcement had previously arrested a street food vendor who verbally abused American YouTuber Emeka Iwueze over pricing a portion of Kottu Roti at Rs.1,900 at a street food stall in Hulftsdorp.   
The suspect was later released on bail after appearing before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. The individual, residing in Colombo 12, was released on a cash bail of Rs.50,000 alongside a surety bail of Rs.1 million.
