Pakistan national nabbed at airport with abortion jabs

A Pakistan national who had arrived at the Bandarnayaka International Airport (BIA) last Friday with 1,240 injections used in abortions and 1,130 tablets prescribed for mental patients was arrested, Custom sources said.

The value of the seized medical items is said to worth Rs. 3 million.

The suspect, a 25-year-old businessman who arrived at the airport at 9.30 pm on Friday on a Sri Lankan flight had stayed at the airport overnight.

The following day as he was attempting to exit through the green channel, the customs officials had searched his baggage, and had found the unauthorised items.

Investigations are underway on the directives of Customs Director General G. Jagath Wijeweera under the supervision of Customs Director of Social Security Unit K.D. Nicolas.

Deputy Customs Director A.K.N.Wickramasinhe who conducted the inquiry fined this Pakistan national Rs. 5,000 and confiscated the seized items. (Deepa Adikari)
