Oil&Gas - Oman has announced the establishment of a temporary maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, following coordination with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and understandings reached between the United States and Iran.
According to Arabian Business, the initiative reflects the Sultanate’s responsibility towards the Strait of Hormuz, its strategic importance to the global economy and its commitment to international law and freedom of navigation.
The temporary corridor will be available to all vessels in accordance with coordinates announced by the IMO and the relevant Omani authorities.
Ships seeking to use the corridor will be required to coordinate with the IMO before transiting the waterway.
Oman said the decision was taken in recognition of the Strait’s importance to international trade, global energy flows and the wider economy.
The announcement also reaffirmed the Sultanate’s commitment to international law and the law of the sea, which uphold freedom of navigation through the Strait without the imposition of transit fees.
According to the statement, the initiative aligns with the outcomes of recent diplomatic efforts and understandings reached between the United States and Iran.
Oman coordinated with the IMO to make the temporary route available to all vessels and support safer, more orderly transit through the strategic waterway.
The corridor will operate according to coordinates issued by the IMO and the competent authorities in Oman.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime passages and serves as a critical route for international shipping, crude oil, refined products and liquefied natural gas.
The temporary corridor is intended to facilitate navigation while maintaining compliance with international maritime regulations and established legal frameworks.
