Police arrested a Navy Commodore after a sailor taken into custody following the Navy double cab-train collision in Puliyankulama admitted that the Navy vehicle was driven by his superior officer.
Due to the collision a Navy sailor lost his life and seven others were injured last Saturday at the Puliyankulama railway crossing in Anuradhapura.
The sailor driver Saumya Bandara who was in remand prison confessed yesterday morning in a statement that he did not drive the double cab and it was his officer Navy Commodore Gajamange who drove the double cab.
However the Naval officer got himself admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital on Tuesday.
Speaking to Daily Mirror, Navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said that an internal inquiry is already underway over the incident.
He said that the Navy double cab was returning to Colombo from the Punewa Naval Base in Anuradhapura.
