The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) today sent a letter of demand to Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne through their Lawyer Tudor Perera, claiming Rs. 1 billion over the remarks he had made regarding JHU Leader Ven. Omalpe Sobitha thera.

JHU spokesperson Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe said, since PM Jayaratne did not apologise to the Buddhist monks including Ven. Sobitha Thera nor withdraw his statement within the allocated 14 days, the JHU had decided to instigate legal action against him.

“Instead of apologising or withdrawing his statement, the Prime Minister has started to openly insult Buddhist monks further, including Chief-incumbent Theras. Therefore we have issued a letter of demand asking him to pay Rs. 1 billion. If he fails to pay this amount within 14 days of notice (starting 20/01/2014) we will go to court and obtain the amount,” Warnasinghe said.  (Jayashika Padmasiri)
