Action to be taken against deserters

As many as 59,267 members of various ranks of the three security forces including 239 senior officers had deserted during the past few years, Parliament was informed today.

The answer tabled by Leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva, to an oral question raised by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake today said warrants had been issued to the relevant police divisions where the deserters belonged, in order to take them into custody.

According to Minister de Silva, in the event of the deserters not reporting to service, they would they would be dismissed.

However, if they report to service beforehand, they would be reinstated following disciplinary action against them. (Yohan Perera)
