A Chief Inspector attached to Weliweriya Police Minor Offence’s Branch who was arrested after swallowing two Rs. 5000 notes which he had accepted as a bribe, was today ordered to be remanded till tomorrow by Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court.
When the case was taken up before Colombo Additional Magistrate Bandara Nelumdeniya, Assistant Director General of the Bribery Commission Thushari Dayaratne along with SI Chandrasiri informed the Court of the medical reports pertaining to swallowed two Rs. 5000 notes had not been received yet to the Commission.
"It was reported that the suspect had bitten the two Rs. 5000 notes and swallowed it. So it was unable to produce case production at the moment," she informed the Court.
Assistant Director General informed that the suspect had arrested when accepting Rs. 10,000 as a bribe from a lorry driver and he had swallowed it before Bribery Commission officials made the arrest.
She informed the Court that the suspect Police Officer had promised the complainant the Police would not take legal action against a complaint in connection with a lorry dispute at the Weliweriya police station and sought a bribe of Rs. 10,000. (Yoshitha Perera)
