Colombo, June 29 (Daily Mirror) - Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has accused the National People’s Power (NPP) government of attempting to cover up its failures through false propaganda and character assassination, while also dragging respected religious leaders into political controversies.

In a strongly worded message posted on social media platform X, Rajapaksa claimed that the government, having failed to deliver on the promises it made during its first year in office, has now resorted to misinformation campaigns to distract the public.

He condemned recent claims suggesting that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had sought the help of the Mahanayake Theros to prevent the arrest of his family members, calling it a “grave disrespect to the venerable Maha Sangha.”

“This is not just a smear campaign against the former President. It is also a shameful attempt to drag our respected religious leaders into political mudslinging,” Rajapaksa stated.

“Such actions must be strongly condemned,” he added.

He further alleged that this is not the first time the NPP government has carried out smear campaigns, accusing it of previously targeting judges and the judiciary with similar tactics. According to Rajapaksa, these efforts are part of a broader attempt to politicise both the police and the judicial system.

“These false allegations against my family are clearly part of a deliberate political strategy,” he said, adding that his family has continuously faced investigations without seeking preferential treatment.

“We have full faith in the judicial system of the country.”

Rajapaksa concluded by urging the government to stop misleading the public and instead focus on fulfilling its responsibilities. He accused the NPP of resorting to “desperate and dishonest” tactics in the face of growing criticism over its governance.
