Colombo, June 7 (Daily Mirror) - The Government has commenced a programme to revive and complete 25 major health infrastructure projects that were abandoned midway, with an estimated investment of Rs. 76 billion needed to finish the developments.
According to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, the programme is being implemented under the guidance of Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa and aims to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the country.
The projects include the construction of the main Ministry of Health building and 24 other priority developments at key hospitals and health institutions. The projects were launched between 2014 and 2024 but were subsequently suspended due to various reasons.
To facilitate the completion of the projects, the Government has allocated Rs. 16 billion through the 2025 Budget. An additional Rs. 19 billion has been earmarked for 2026, while a further Rs. 38 billion is expected to be allocated in 2027.
The Ministry said the initiative is expected to accelerate the completion of critical healthcare infrastructure and improve the delivery of health services nationwide.
