Due to the lack of sufficient standard sanitary facilities available for the public, as well as the increasing number of local and foreign tourists visiting urban areas daily, the Government has decided to construct proper sanitary facilities, including standard lavatory systems.
Accordingly, the project, proposed by the Urban Development Authority (UDA), is part of the country’s broader urban development plan and will be implemented at selected high-traffic locations. The total estimated cost for the project is Rs. 525.29 million.
The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for the project, which was presented by the Minister of Urban Development, Construction and Housing.
The proposed sanitary facilities will be constructed at key sites including Demodara Railway Station, Sigiriya Hotel Junction, Lake Circus in Nuwara Eliya and Kandy, Gregory Lake in Nuwara Eliya, Kinniya Beach, Marble Beach, and Nilaveli Coastal Area in Trincomalee, Pasikuda in Batticaloa, Ruwanweliseya Parking Area, Lankapura in Polonnaruwa, Jaffna Kurikattuwan Jetty Complex, Hikkaduwa Coastal Belt, Hiriketiya in Dikwella, Pareiwella Coastal Park in Tangalle, Nine Arch Bridge in Ella, Moragolla Beach in Beruwala, Mount Lavinia Railway Station, Negombo Coastal Park (Phase I), Battaramulla Junction, and Badagamuwa Forest Park in Kurunegala.
