Danushka Gunathilaka appears in Sydney Court

Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka appeared by video link in handcuffs at a Sydney court on Monday to seek bail after he was charged with four counts of sexual assault. Gunathilaka, who spoke only to confirm his identity, was shown on a screen in Downing Centre Local Court. 

According to Australian media that the cricketer appeared calm as he sat wearing a grey T-shirt at a Sydney detention center. 

The batter’s lawyer, Ananda Amaranath, said he would seek bail for the 31-year-old.

Earlier, lawyer Ananda Amaranath has told The Daily Telegraph the cricketer is “very worried” about being denied any request to leave Australia.

“He was hoping it would get to court (Sunday), so he‘s disappointed that didn’t happen, but he is holding up OK,” Amaranath said.

“He is quite concerned about what will happen if he can’t get back to Sri Lanka … these are serious charges and it could take a year or more for this to be finalised, so he is very worried about that too.” lawyer added.
