Colombo, May 3 (Daily Mirror) - The Meteorology Department has issued a severe lightning advisory, warning of thundershowers accompanied by intense lightning activity in several parts of the country today (3).

Accordingly, thundershowers are likely to occur after 1.00 p.m. in the North-Central, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern provinces, as well as in the districts of Badulla, Colombo, Kalutara, Galle and Matara.

The advisory, issued at 12.00 noon and valid until 1.30 p.m., indicates a high to moderate risk level of lightning in affected areas. Temporary localized strong winds are also expected during thundershowers.

The Department has urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damage and risks associated with lightning activity.

People are advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid taking cover under trees. They are also cautioned to stay away from open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and water bodies during thunderstorms.

Additionally, the public is requested to refrain from using wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to power sources during lightning conditions, and to avoid open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats.

Residents are further warned to remain vigilant of hazards such as fallen trees and downed power lines.

In case of emergencies, the public is advised to contact local disaster management authorities.
