A ton of gas in world market increased by more than 80% compared to 2019: State Minister

The world market price of a ton of gas has increased by more than 80 percent compared to 2019, Cooperative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna said.

Although the price of a ton of gas in the world market in 2019 is $361, the current price of a ton of gas has risen to $651, he said. 

"As compared to a 12.5 kg gas cylinder sold for Rs.1,493. The gas companies had requested to increase the gas prices by Rs.750 for six months, " the Minister said.

The Minister further said that the increase in gas prices was not approved due to the government's responsibility to act in accordance with its policies. The government is taking steps to prevent inconvenience for consumers.

The State Minister had responded to a request made by the Assistant Government Whip MP, Mohammad Muzammil's request to provide immediate solution for gas consumers. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
