Colombo, March 27 (Daily Mirror) - The National Youth Corps has opened a new modern shooting range at its Weeraketiya Training Center, aiming to improve the sports skills of youth and schoolchildren in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province.
The facility was officially opened by Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage. The initiative is expected to help develop young athletes and provide opportunities to reach international standards in shooting sports.
Several officials attended the event, including Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Dinindu Saman Hennayake, Deputy Minister of Lands and Irrigation Aravinda Senarath, and Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Ruwan Senarath, along with National Youth Corps Chairman Nalin Radampala and Director Gamini Wickramapala.
Speaking at the event, Minister Gamage said the government is working to expand sporting opportunities across multiple disciplines, rather than limiting focus to only a few sports. He also noted that efforts are underway to introduce new sports and promote international-level training in the country.
During the ceremony, certificates were also awarded to trainees who completed training at the center.
