The passing of Padmasiri De Alwis at the age of 75 leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him. Affectionately known as “DD” during his tenure as the Deputy Director of the Arthur C. Clarke Institute, Padmasiri was the embodiment of professional excellence and structural brilliance. An expert in steel, his illustrious career spanned the Ceylon Steel Corporation and later OneSteel Australia, where his expertise remained highly sought after well into his retirement. Among his many engineering triumphs, his innovative design of the moving roof for Sri Lanka’s largest telescope stands as a lasting testament to his ingenuity.
Yet, beyond his formidable intellect, Padmasiri was a true Kalyana Mithra—a noble and virtuous friend. A fine sportsman and a symbol of vitality, he anchored his life firmly in the teachings of the Dhamma. He possessed a gentle, reassuring wit; when I once despondently questioned the workings of karma regarding my son’s education, DD calmly reminded me to trust in time. Months later, when a university offer finally arrived, he smiled and remarked, “Karma will not abandon you.”
He was a man who lived by the principles he cherished. Though he left us too soon, his legacy of integrity, warmth, and positivity lives on.
May my dear friend attain the supreme bliss of Nirvana.
