A hawk lying on an embankment by Bibila-Badulla highway  at the 32nd kilometre post was handed over to the wildlife officers by  the Bibila Police.

A resident of the area, a manager of a private institution  Samira Kotalawala, who noticed the hawk had called over at the police and  informed it.    Wildlife officers said it was a red-tailed hawk of a rare  species of bird endangered with extinction, and that it is a bird of  prey. They were of the opinion that it had hit the embankment when it made a  sharp dive at a prey.

The wildlife officials said the hawk would be provided treatment and released into the jungle.
