A hawk lying on an embankment by Bibila-Badulla highway at the 32nd kilometre post was handed over to the wildlife officers by the Bibila Police.
A resident of the area, a manager of a private institution Samira Kotalawala, who noticed the hawk had called over at the police and informed it. Wildlife officers said it was a red-tailed hawk of a rare species of bird endangered with extinction, and that it is a bird of prey. They were of the opinion that it had hit the embankment when it made a sharp dive at a prey.
The wildlife officials said the hawk would be provided treatment and released into the jungle.
