The proposed Social Security Contribution Levy would further burden the people as it would result in further increase of the Value Added Tax (VAT) to 20%, National People's Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today.

He told Parliament that the levy which was proposed in the interim budget was expected to charge a 2.5% tax on turnover in addition to the 15% VAT.

The MP said the new Social Security Contribution Levy would be charged on turnover during import, export, production, distribution and sale resulting in the increase of 20% VAT in total. He said this is a repetitive tax as it would be applied in various stages of the same item.

Mr. Dissanayake said those who are responsible for putting the country into an acute economic crisis are scot free, whereas the common man is further burdened by imposing new taxes.

"No action has been taken against those responsible for putting the agricultural sector into total disarray by prohibiting chemical fertilizer, paying compensation to a Chinese fertilizer shipment and paying huge amount of money as durmurages to fuel shipments. The general public is continuously burdened instead," he said.

The MP said NPP as s party will object to the proposed levy. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

These taxes are part of the deal done with the IMF. They never lend any money for free. Only fools can't see otherwise. This is only the start. Many more direct and indirect taxes headed our way.

Well done Anura your view was further established by Dr Harsha of SJB

Maybe then better just to have a single VAT at 20% across the board than these different types of taxes. The SBJ is napping about the budget matters since they choose to abstain. The NPP/JVP seems to be the only lot speaking about end effects of the budget at the current time. However, the their opposing the Social Security Contribution Levy seems silly as that's meant to raise money for paying for social security of those who need it. What does the NPP have as a way to raise money for Samudri payments and other payments focused on the poor?

What does Mr. Dissanayake propose to collect the required revenue if not for VAT and levy. Maybe Mr. Dissanayake has already forgotten the problems that we've got since the VAT was slashed by Gota. Higher tax on corporate earning, including money paid out as dividends is another way to raise revenue. Government employees n Sri Lanka are not taxed, which is an aberration. In other countries do tax state sector employees, including military personnel. All according to their earnings just what happens for those in private sector.

Increase is not in VAT, since this SSC is a turnover tax without input claim, it will add 2.5% from each stage. A product moving from manufacturer to distributior to wholeseller to retailer to the final consumer will result in additional 10.6% in taxes, excluding the SSC on the margins at each stages

You want disadvantaged people to suffer more so that you can exploit such poor people for your vote bank. If the bill is passed your vote bank will be negatively affected. JVP only worried about that not any taxes you are talking about ! Selfish JVP

Don't blame the IMF, our politicians got us into this mess by keeping on expanding the most inefficient government sector. IMF as of now is like the Doctor and SL is the patient with diabetics, so IMF asks us to reduce eating sweet if we wanne get better. Mind you IMF didn't come behind us we are the ones who went begging behind them.

Anura and Hersha are the lone rangers who has the facts and .logic behind them when putting forward their cases. Othere simply are like dumb and deaf, always waiting to pounce on regardless. Against Anura's case with the customary 71, 88, 89 baila. I wish the day when common sense prevails and those who who speak and practice it reigns.

Now based on this theory even the payment hawker will go and increase price by 20% not 5%. that's how our system works. A tax is increased from 15% to 20%(effectively by 5%) and everyone goes and increase by 20%

This is not mere a hiking TAX reform, but the order of the IMF, a puppet of the US instigating violent-protest to oust HE Gotabaya Rajapaksa, to promote a constitutional amendment that should secure the demands of the TAMIL EELAMIST to split the United SRI LANKA into TAMIL EELAM.

Lost all respect for you. I like to know what Anura's solution is to the crisis. These are idiots who claim they can fix seventy years of damage in six months. Tell us what you will do instead of always criticizing without substance. Taxes are a must that none of us like. Only fools like MR and GR would drastically reduce taxes and interest rates.

JVP shouted when the VAT was reduced by Gotabaya government and now again objecting when it is being increased.Do they have a better plan to increase the government revenue? No point in talking about spilled milk now must join hands and get out of this mess.JVP doesn’t want the country getting back to normal because they always thrive on problems blaming someone .Why doesn’t Anura Kumara and his party take action with all those corruption files he was showcasing.Since his party doesn’t have anything to do other than always blaming someone at least start that.

Correctly pointed out by all writers on top. This bunch are as confused as they are, contradictory. Lost at sea.
