Recent 75% electricity tariff is a farce: CEB Trade Union Alliance

A A A

The recent 75% increase in the electricity tariff is incorrect; it is a 100% increase when considering higher unit rates, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) United Trade Union Alliance said.

Trade Union Alliance Convener Ranjan Jayalal said the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) granted permission to increase the electricity tariff by 75% from August 8.

Addressing the media, he said the category with consumption less than 30 units will be charged 42% of the cost.

The units between 30 and 60 had been increased by 178.07%. All electricity usage units up to 200 will get a 100% tariff increase. Small-scale industries face serious issues with this increase.

As a result, the price of all essential goods and services relating to electricity has gone up to where people cannot afford it.

Therefore, the Trade Union Alliance raised their opposition to this recent electricity tariff increase.

Jayalal claimed that CEB trade unions have not called for any discussions regarding the electricity tariff increase.

We can show the minister how we can change the CEB into a profitable institute without privatising it. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

No more tax man Monday, 15 August 2022 05:04 AM

Inefficient employees and trade unions are major reason for this tariff hike. Go for PPP now

    Nm Monday, 15 August 2022 05:05 AM

Get rid of union parasites like this guy who had feathered their nests with massive salary increases, allowances

    Bn Monday, 15 August 2022 05:17 AM

We are suffering because of such guys in the CEB. It is time to rise against such blood suckers.

    Theif Monday, 15 August 2022 05:24 AM

Ask him the salary increases and perks they are getting. Also why some of the projects are stagnated?

    Dee Monday, 15 August 2022 05:59 AM

If the CEB is privatised soon, the hike can be less than 50% . Without any unions that is. If unions come in , privatisation would be of absolutely no use!

    Jayantha Monday, 15 August 2022 06:15 AM

Lol. Future governments should get rid of these trade union jokers who are also destroying the economy same as Rajapakha family. Singpaore developed as they were very strict on trade unions and strikes.

Citizen Perera Monday, 15 August 2022 06:40 AM

You union people are trying to protect over staff jobs. Can you justify CEB need over 1000 engineers and so much other employees. You should not tell lies to public but turn the mirror to yourself and employees

dilshan ferdinando Monday, 15 August 2022 07:00 AM

why not give a solution ( hint - check the salary bill )

    Kumar Monday, 15 August 2022 07:21 AM

All industries should be encouraged to add solar power to reduce cost. In the Central valley area in California farmers and industries are generating 30 gigawatts energy on average daily to reduce cost. So, why can't Sri Lanka do the same.

    "Commission" Monday, 15 August 2022 11:30 AM

Is it true, Kumar? Unbelievable!! But how much will the President get? How much for PM? How much for minister? How much for me? You know I am Sri Lankan. In SL we understand only a language called "commission". Can you explain the whole thing in "commission". Unfortunately Google Translate has not listed "commission" despite it being a binary% number. (DM kindly publishe my comment or have I got to comment only in "commission" to get it published)

    Consumer Monday, 15 August 2022 07:22 AM

Thanks for informing us. Now could you get your union members to increase productivity and reduce wastage please. Perhaps also focus on the overtime bill and the variouscallowances too. Hopefully those savings could be passed on to consumers. Thanks so much.

Ala Paluwa Monday, 15 August 2022 07:36 AM

You TU leaders take a pay cut and overtime charges and help reduce the costs

    Chux Monday, 15 August 2022 07:54 AM

This has to restructured and if so privatized also we must ensure to protect the country from trade union mafia

    Prof. M.R. Keerthiratne Monday, 15 August 2022 07:56 AM

Anyway, 75% increased electricity tariff is not accepted and not bearable by the public overhaul, for sure the entire nation will get in to the streets to protest this move soon.

One more Aragalaya Monday, 15 August 2022 07:57 AM

Great news. Keep up you Aragalaya, so that the Sri Lanka - people and Industries will benefit. This is one Union Aragalaya, which has positive color. Good Luck.

Boru Na Atha.... Atha Monday, 15 August 2022 08:00 AM

Reducing a small amount on Fuel and LP Gas and increasing the electricity tariff by 75% as said is not atall fair. People who don't have any knowledge (Chairman PUCSL) should be a nutty and deaf

    Gayan Monday, 15 August 2022 08:56 AM

Your bonus, increments, OT payments are even bigger farce. Not to mention kickbacks.

    johan Monday, 15 August 2022 09:31 AM

Use RTI and try to get all unpaid bills by politicians and their families it will run to billions of rupees.Poor person not paid a small amount their power supply is disconnected

    Sampath Monday, 15 August 2022 09:51 AM

This guy should not be part of the trade union. He represent JVP and he should be doing politics which would have been much better. TUs should be there to look after the employee relations not to do politics. There has to be new laws to curb these politicians get into TUs.

    DD Monday, 15 August 2022 10:01 AM

This institute should have been privatized long time ago as this and other state institutions like rail SLTB ports airport should have been done so as to have a professional service and a profitable one at that with an impeccable professional service where we could pay for that level of professional service

    Jef Monday, 15 August 2022 11:02 AM

The real problem is we have categories sectors apponties got no clue basic common sense extremely lacking that's the truth if you get a professional report done with profit

    anil Monday, 15 August 2022 12:51 PM

Fix a meter to CEB employees and see how many hour actually working for CEB, pay salary only for actual workings hours.

    Jonaka Monday, 15 August 2022 01:02 PM

Janaka, as usual, was boasting that he was in consultation with stakeholders before deciding on tariff revision? It appears that all stake holders he consulted had approved the massive increases but are now complaining ?

    Romantha Monday, 15 August 2022 01:05 PM

Other than a few CEB plants, its clear that everyone is sick of these trade unions and their corruption. Privatize this sector please!

Kanapala Palabetta Tuesday, 16 August 2022 03:11 AM

Former chairman of CEB has a brain problem? Ask him how to solve this issue!! Now Moda Kanchana has no option, but to say YES SIR to ponnaya!!

CEB union man Tuesday, 16 August 2022 02:06 PM

Maithripala Sirisena caused the generation crisis. The CEB was totally supportive of them PM Ranil proposal for new power plant. We got news Sirisena took behind the scenes payment from private power producer to block the proposal for another government own major plant.
